Why it works out so cheap
Two reasons. The flight is cheap on a Monday, and Faro itself is cheap once you're there. The trip page puts the day on the ground at £19.25, that's £8.00 for lunch and £11.25 for dinner. The lowest of the 26 cities in our spending money guide.
The other thing is size. Faro's old town, the marina and the walls are all close together, so you can do it on foot and you're not paying for trams all day.
How the day goes
Portugal is on UK time, so the 06:25 flight gets you in mid morning with the whole day ahead. The sun comes up at 07:37 and goes down at 17:16 on the 14th, so you've got the best of the light.
Start in the old town. You go in through the Arco da Vila, and it's all cobbles and whitewash behind the walls. The town museum is €4.00 if you want a look inside.
Lunch by the marina, then a choice. Either a boat out into the Ria Formosa lagoon, about €25.00 for a short trip if the weather's kind, or the long sandy beach at Praia de Faro outside town.
Back into town for dinner and a slow walk by the water before the airport. You land at Gatwick just before 11.
