Prague Christmas Market Opening Day: A November Day Trip That Works

10:05, you're through the airport and into a city that's just switched its lights on for the season. Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square both open their markets on 28 November 2026, which happens to be a Saturday, which happens to be perfect for a day trip. Náměstí Míru market's already been running a while, so that's an option too if you want a quieter version of the same thing.

Right, here's what we'd skip, and what we'd actually do with the 12 hours or so you've got.

Skip: rushing straight to the tree lighting

The Old Town Square tree gets lit on 28 November, the same day you're there. Tempting to plan your whole day around it. Don't. The lighting time isn't published anywhere official, and these things are almost always an evening do. Your flight home is 21:40, so you'll be heading for the airport around 20:00, and if the lighting is later than that you'll miss it. Don't build your schedule around a moment you might not see. Go for the market itself, which is there all day from 10:00, rather than chasing a specific minute that isn't confirmed.

Skip: doing Wenceslas Square first

Wenceslas Square's market is worth it, but it's a long straight boulevard rather than a proper square, so the atmosphere's more spread out and a bit more market-stall-on-a-pavement than magical medieval square. If you hit it first, Old Town Square afterwards will feel like the main event it actually is. Do it the other way and Old Town Square will have already spent its best trick.

Old Town Square is the one with the astronomical clock, the big tree, and the stalls packed in tight around it. That's your priority window, especially with the tree freshly lit for the season even if you don't catch the actual switch-on.

Skip: filling up on the first trdelník you see

Every stall sells the cinnamon-sugar chimney cake and every stall will tell you theirs is the best. It's not, they're all roughly the same, and at market prices they add up fast if you're grabbing one every twenty minutes because you're cold and it smells amazing. Pace yourself. One trdelník near midday, mulled wine (svařák) properly earned in the afternoon when your fingers have gone numb. That's the correct order of operations.

What we'd actually do with the day

Into town by about 10:05, and the markets are already open, so head straight for Old Town Square while the crowds are still manageable. Wander the stalls, get a coffee, take in the tree and the clock. This is the golden hour of the trip before everyone else wakes up and piles in.

By midday, walk down to Wenceslas Square. It's a straightforward walk between the two, and the market there has its own stalls worth a browse even if the setting's less pretty. Lunch somewhere here, traditional Czech food if you fancy it, goulash or a proper roast pork and dumplings to fuel the rest of the day.

Afternoon is for wandering. Prague in late November is properly cold, so this is the point where the mulled wine starts making sense. If you want a quieter market experience away from the main tourist crush, Náměstí Míru is already up and running by this point in the season and worth the detour if you've got the legs for it.

As it gets dark, mid-afternoon in late November, both main markets properly come alive. Lights on, stalls glowing, the whole thing looks like the postcard. This is your window for the best photos and the best atmosphere, well before your 21:40 flight.

No entry price is published for either market, so budget for food, drink and whatever you fancy from the craft stalls, and check on the day.

The honest bit

A day trip on opening day gets you the best of it without the faff of a hotel booking. You will miss the tree lighting most likely, and you won't get an evening of it stretching into the night the way a longer stay would. But about 12 hours in Prague with both main markets open and running is still a proper day out, cold hands, mulled wine, and all.
