The cheapest Valentine's day trip for two from the north is Edinburgh to Cork on Sunday 14 February 2027, £55.00 return each and £221.70 for the whole day for two. Edinburgh to Dublin is £241.70 for two.

Most Valentine's day trip lists are written for London. This one isn't.
If you're in Scotland or the north of England, your cheapest options on Sunday 14 February 2027 look quite different, and a couple of them are properly good value. All prices below are for two people, flights plus the day on the ground, unless I say otherwise.
The shortlist
- Edinburgh to Cork, £221.70 for two. £55.00 return each with Ryanair. Out at 05:55, back at 21:40, home at 23:00.
- Edinburgh to Dublin, £241.70 for two. £82.00 each. Out at 06:00, back at 20:45, home at 21:50.
- Leeds Bradford to Dublin, £247.70 for two. £85.00 each. Out at 07:30, back at 22:00, home at 23:00.
- Glasgow to Dublin, £271.70 for two. £97.00 each. Out at 07:25, back at 21:00, home at 22:00.
- Liverpool to Amsterdam, £289.30 for two. £101.00 each with easyJet. Out at 06:20, back at 21:30, home at 21:55.
- Liverpool to Málaga, £296.60 for two. £116.00 each. Out at 05:50, back at 20:55, home at 22:55.
Those are the six cheapest whole days we found from the north on the 14th. Every one of them has its own page with the full breakdown.
Cork, the surprise winner
I didn't expect Cork to top this. But from Edinburgh it's the cheapest flight going on Valentine's Day, and you get a long day out of it.
The day costs £55.85 each on the ground. That's £14.00 for the bus in and out, £4.00 for getting around, £17.60 for lunch and £20.25 for dinner. Cork isn't a cheap place to eat, so that's where the money goes.
What to do? The English Market is free and it's the heart of the city. Elizabeth Fort is free, and so is a walk through Fitzgerald's Park to the Shakey Bridge, which is about as romantic as a bridge with that name can be. If you want a proper day out, Blarney Castle and Gardens is €24 each.
Sunset in Cork that day is at 17:45, so you get the afternoon light. Cork from Edinburgh on 14 February
Dublin, three ways
Dublin shows up from Edinburgh, Leeds Bradford and Glasgow, and it's the easiest of the lot. Aircoach into town, everything walkable, and no shortage of cosy pubs to hide in if the February weather turns.

On the ground it's £38.85 each. £10.00 for Aircoach there and back, £5.00 for getting around, £9.60 for lunch and £14.25 for dinner. The Book of Kells at Trinity is €25 if you want one paid thing. The National Gallery, the National Museum and Phoenix Park are all free.
Pick your airport. Edinburgh, Leeds Bradford or Glasgow.
From Leeds Bradford the 07:30 departure is a nice civilised start, and you're still not home till 23:00.
Amsterdam from Liverpool
If you want somewhere that feels more like an occasion, Liverpool to Amsterdam is £101.00 each and £144.65 each for the whole day. Canals, little bridges, dinner somewhere warm. The Begijnhof courtyard is free and quiet, and it's one of the most peaceful spots in the city.

Sunset there is at 17:48. A walk along the canals as the lights come on is the whole point of the trip. Amsterdam from Liverpool on 14 February
What about Manchester?
Manchester is the expensive one on the day itself. The cheapest we found on the 14th was Cork at £127.00 each.
So here's my honest tip. Go the weekend before. On Sunday 7 February, Manchester to Cork is £46.00 return and £101.85 each for the whole day, out at 08:00 and back at 22:35. That's £203.70 for two, cheaper than any option on the 14th from anywhere in the north. Cork from Manchester on 7 February
The same trick works across the UK. When we looked at every UK airport, the middle fare on Sunday 14 February was £155.50 against £130 on other Sundays. Valentine's is a Sunday next year, so Saturday the 13th is another option. Edinburgh to Dublin on the Saturday is £66.00 each and £104.85 each all in.
Making it feel like a treat
A day trip for two can easily feel like a long commute if you don't plan it a bit. A few things that help.
- Book one nice meal and keep the rest cheap. In Dublin that might be a big lunch and a pint later, in Cork it's the English Market for lunch and somewhere proper for dinner.
- Sit together on the plane. On some airlines that costs extra, so check before you book and add it to the total.
- Take the early flight even if it hurts. The extra hours in the city are the trip.
- Leave a gap in the afternoon with nothing planned. It's the bit you'll remember.
Before you book
These were the fares on 30 October, and February fares will move between now and then. The trip pages always show today's price, so check there first.
