Passports now required for UK-Ireland ferry crossings

Both Irish Ferries and Stena Line announced the change in late August 2026, citing UK Border Force requirements around the accuracy and integrity of passenger data. Under the Common Travel Area, British and Irish citizens do not legally need a passport to travel between the two countries, but ferry operators are now required to collect passport details before boarding to stay compliant with UK Border Force policy.

Which routes are affected?

The requirement applies to all sailings on the following routes from 28 September 2026:

• Irish Ferries: Dublin to Holyhead and Rosslare to Pembroke
• Stena Line: Dublin to Holyhead and Rosslare to Fishguard

If you currently travel with only a driving licence or a national identity card, you will be refused boarding after this date. A passport card is accepted as an alternative to a full passport if you hold one.

What if I do not have a passport?

Standard passport applications in Ireland and the UK both take several weeks, so if you do not yet have a passport and plan to travel after 28 September, start the process now. Irish citizens can apply through the Passport Online service. UK citizens can apply or renew at gov.uk/renew-adult-passport. A fast-track service is available in both countries for an additional fee if time is short.

Yes. Both operators have confirmed that a passport card is accepted in place of a full passport book. If you hold an Irish passport card, that is sufficient for the crossing.
