Day Trip to Rome from the UK: Is One Day Worth It?
Yes, if you plan it. Stansted to Ciampino on Tuesday 24 November is £44 return (checked 14 Oct) with about 6.4 hours in Rome. With food and transport the whole day is around £87. Birmingham and Gatwick work too.

Rome gets more UK searches for a day trip than almost anywhere. Most people ask the same handful of questions, so here they are, answered with real prices.
Can you really do Rome in a day from the UK?
Yes. Ryanair from Stansted to Ciampino on Tuesday 24 November leaves at 06:25 and lands at 09:50. The flight home is at 20:05 and you're back at Stansted by 21:45. That's about 6.4 hours in the city once you've got in and out of the airport.

How much does it cost?
£44 return for the flights, checked on 14 October. Our estimate for the rest is about £43: the bus and metro into town, getting around, lunch, dinner and a drink. Call it £87 for the whole day. See the live price for 24 November.
Which UK airports can you go from?
- Stansted, Tue 24 Nov: £44, about 6.4 hours in Rome
- Edinburgh, Thu 12 Nov: £66, about 6.7 hours
- Birmingham, Fri 20 Nov: £71, about 7 hours
- Gatwick, Mon 30 Nov: £72, about 6.8 hours
- Manchester, Sat 28 Nov: £93, about 6.5 hours
All checked between 8 and 14 October. Prices move, so check before you book.
What can you see for free?
More than you'd think. The Trevi Fountain, St Peter's Basilica, the Villa Borghese gardens with the view from the Pincio terrace, and the Gianicolo hill. The Pantheon is free on the first Sunday of the month.

Is six and a half hours enough?
For a first look, yes. Pick one side of the city. Colosseum and the old centre one trip, the Vatican and Trastevere the next. Try to do both and you'll spend the day on the metro.

So is it worth it?
For under £90 for the whole day, we think so. It's a long day and the alarm is early, but you'll eat proper pasta for lunch and be in your own bed that night.
