Tallinn Christmas Market Day Trip: Mad, Long and £131
Visit Tallinn lists the Christmas market from 20 November 2026 to 6 January 2027. Ryanair from Stansted on Monday 30 November was £131 return on Google Flights on 12 October, giving about 9.5 hours in Tallinn. You land back at 00:10. Budget about £195.

This is an extreme one. Tallinn is a three hour flight, two hours ahead of the UK, and you land back after midnight. But the Old Town at Christmas is something else, and the flights are cheap.
Can you really do Tallinn in a day?
Yes. Ryanair from Stansted on Monday 30 November leaves at 07:00 and lands in Tallinn at 11:45 local time. The flight home leaves at 23:10 and lands at Stansted at 00:10. £131 return on Google Flights, checked on 12 October 2026. Google shows it as two separate tickets, so check the price on both legs when you book.

When is the Tallinn Christmas market in 2026?
Visit Tallinn lists it from 20 November 2026 to 6 January 2027 on Town Hall Square. The same page says the Christmas tree lights go on on the first Sunday of Advent, which is 29 November this year. So on the 30th you get the tree lit. Daily hours weren't listed when we checked, so look at visittallinn.ee before you go.

Where is the Christmas market in Tallinn?
On Town Hall Square, Raekoja plats, in the middle of the Old Town. The tree goes up in the middle of the square with the wooden stalls around it and the Gothic Town Hall behind. It's the official Christmas market of the city and the atmosphere after dark is the reason to make the trip to Estonia.
How long do you get in Tallinn?
About nine and a half hours. Tram 4 from the airport takes about 18 minutes and costs €2. You're in the Old Town by about 12:15 and you can stay until about 21:45.
What do you do with nine hours?
- Walk the Old Town. It's small and it's all free
- St Catherine's Passage, the medieval lane off Vene street
- The Patkuli and Kohtuotsa viewing platforms for the rooftops
- Kiek in de Kok and the Bastion Passages, €16, if you want to get out of the cold
- Back to Town Hall Square when it's dark, which is early this far north

What does it cost?
About £195 a person. That's the £131 flight and about £64 on the ground: £4 for the tram both ways, £5 for other transport, £15 for lunch, £40 for dinner and £6 for a drink. You've got time for a proper dinner here, so we've left it in.
Is the Tallinn Christmas market free?
Yes. Town Hall Square is a public square and there's no entry fee. You only pay for food, drink and anything you buy at the stalls.
What to eat and drink in Tallinn at Christmas
- Hõõgvein: Estonian mulled wine, sold all over the square
- Glögi: the spiced hot drink you'll see on every menu, with or without alcohol
- Verivorst: blood sausage, the traditional Estonian Christmas dish, usually with sauerkraut
- Piparkoogid: thin spiced gingerbread biscuits
- Smoked fish from the stalls
Lunch at the market and a proper dinner in the Old Town is the way to do it. You've got the time on this one.
Where else in Tallinn is Christmassy?
Visit Tallinn says most public squares have their own Christmas trees, and its winter pages show an ice rink in the Old Town too. The whole of the medieval centre is the attraction, so don't spend all day on one square. Walk the walls, go up to Toompea for the view, and come back down to the market when it's dark.
Is Tallinn too far for a day trip?
It's at the edge of what we'd call a day trip. You're up at 04:00 or so for a 07:00 flight and you're home after 01:00. But you get nine and a half hours in one of the best preserved medieval towns in Europe, at Christmas, for £131. We'd do it.
Tips for a Tallinn Christmas day trip
- Estonia uses the euro, and you can pay by card almost everywhere
- English is widely spoken in the Old Town, so language won't be a problem
- Wear boots with grip. The cobbles get icy
- Buy the tram ticket from the machine at the stop, it's the €2 one-hour ticket
- It gets dark by mid-afternoon this far north, so do the walking in daylight and save the market for the evening
- Travel with hand luggage only. Two separate tickets means no bags checked through
What's the catch?
Getting home. You land at Stansted at 00:10 on a Tuesday, so sort out how you're getting home from the airport before you go. And it's cold. Late November in Tallinn is well below what you're used to in London.
