Short answer: it's tight, but it works if you only want the market and a walk round the old town. Here's the honest version.
The flights
Ryanair from Stansted on Saturday 5 December leaves at 09:40 and lands in Salzburg at 12:35. The flight home leaves at 17:50 and lands at Stansted at 18:45. £83 return on Google Flights, checked on 12 October 2026. That's the only same-day return we found from London.

When is the Salzburg Christmas market in 2026?
The Salzburger Christkindlmarkt on Domplatz and Residenzplatz runs from 19 November 2026 to 1 January 2027. On Saturdays it's open 9:00 to 21:00. Salzburg's tourist board lists the dates, and 5 December is one of them.
Where is the Salzburg Christmas market?
On Domplatz, the square in front of Salzburg Cathedral, and next door on Residenzplatz. It's the traditional Advent market of the old town, with the fortress above it. Everything is in walking distance, which matters when you've only got three hours.
How long do you actually get?
About three hours. Bus 2 from the airport takes about 23 minutes and costs €3. You're on Domplatz by about 13:15, and you want to be heading back by about 16:15.
What fits in three hours?
- The market on Domplatz and Residenzplatz. That's the main event
- Lunch from the stalls instead of a sit-down meal
- A walk along Getreidegasse, the old shopping street
- A look up at Hohensalzburg Fortress. The funicular ticket is €15.50 if you want to go up, but it eats half your time

The good
- £83 return is cheap for Austria in December
- The market is a short walk from the bus stop
- You're home by 19:00, so no late night
The bad
- Three hours goes fast
- You'll leave just as it gets dark, which is when the market looks best
- Only Saturdays work on this route
What does it cost?
About £110 a person if you eat at the market. That's the £83 flight, £6 for the bus both ways, £16 for lunch and £5 for a drink. There's no time for dinner, so we've left it out.
Is the Salzburg Christmas market free?
Yes. Domplatz and Residenzplatz are public squares and there's no ticket. You pay for what you eat, drink and buy.
What to eat at the Salzburg Christmas market
- Glühwein, the mulled wine, and Punsch, the hot fruit punch
- Bratwurst and Bosna, the Salzburg hot dog with onions and curry powder
- Lebkuchen, the soft spiced gingerbread
- Roasted chestnuts
- Kiachl: fried dough, sweet or with sauerkraut
How do you get from Salzburg Airport to the market?
Bus 2 runs from the airport into the city in about 23 minutes, and a single is €3. Bus 10 is faster at about 15 minutes. Get off near the old town and walk to Domplatz. Allow at least an hour and a half at the airport on the way back.
Our verdict
Go if you want a taste of an Austrian Christmas market for under £120 and you're happy with a quick visit. If you want the fortress, the museums and the market lit up at night, Munich is the better day trip.
