Cologne Christmas Market in November: Day Trip with a Bundesliga Match

Yes. On Saturday 28 November Cologne's Cathedral and Heumarkt Christmas markets are both open, and 1. FC Köln play SV Elversberg at home at 15:30. Markets in the morning, the match in the afternoon, more market after, all in one day trip.

10:00 on a Saturday morning, and Cologne's Christmas markets are already properly going. This is the good bit about visiting in late November rather than December: the stalls are up, the mulled wine's flowing, and you're not fighting the whole of Germany for a spot at the Glühwein counter yet. Add a Bundesliga match in the same afternoon and you've got a day that's hard to beat for the money.
This particular Saturday, 28 November 2026, lines up nicely. The Cathedral Christmas market (Markt der Herzen) has been open since 16 November, so by the time you land it's well bedded in. Heumarkt's market, Heinzels Wintermärchen, is also running. And 1. FC Köln play SV Elversberg at home, kick-off 15:30. It's the kind of day where you plan around the football and let the markets fill in the gaps either side.
When we checked on 28 October, Saturday 28 November was £152.00 return from Stansted, out at 07:40 and home at 21:25. Match day pushes the fare up, so book early if you want it. See today's times and price for Sat 28 Nov 2026.
Morning market or lunchtime market: which one first
Land just before 10:00, S-Bahn into town in about 15 minutes, and the obvious move is the Cathedral market first. It opens at 10:00 on Saturdays, right by the cathedral itself, so it's a straight walk out of the station and you're in among the stalls before most people have finished breakfast. Wander, get a coffee, take the photos everyone takes of the market stalls with the cathedral spires behind them. It's a proper picture even if you've seen it a thousand times online.
Heumarkt's market, Heinzels Wintermärchen, doesn't open until 11:00, so it makes sense as your second stop rather than your first. It's a different feel to the Cathedral one, less about the backdrop and more about the market itself, so it's worth the walk over once you've done the big photo op.
Here's the honest bit: the Cathedral market is the one everyone photographs, but it can feel more like a photo opportunity than a market you'd actually shop at, packed tight against the cathedral walls with limited space to breathe. Heumarkt gives you more room and a slightly more local feel. If you've only got time for one before the match, we'd still say do the Cathedral one for the setting, but don't skip Heumarkt if you can help it.
The match: what to build the afternoon around
Kick-off is 15:30, 1. FC Köln against SV Elversberg. This is really the anchor of the day. You'll want to have eaten, market-hopped, and be heading towards the ground well before half three. Ticket prices for this fixture aren't published yet, so keep an eye on the club's own site nearer the date rather than relying on a resale price you see now.

Football in Germany at this time of year has its own thing going, cold air, floodlights coming on early, the whole ground bouncing. It's a different kind of festive to the markets, but it fits the day well. Budget a good hour before kick-off to get to the ground, find your seat, and settle in.
Evening: back to the markets before you fly home
Both markets run until 22:00, so there's a proper window after the final whistle to head back into town for round two. This is honestly the best time to be at either market. The floodlit stalls, the crowds have thinned from peak afternoon, and you're not rushing round with one eye on kick-off any more. It's just wandering, eating, drinking, and enjoying it properly.

Your flight home is 21:25, so you've got a solid couple of hours post-match to eat something proper, get another mulled wine, and pick up whatever you were eyeing up that morning before the crowds got to it. Bratwurst, roasted almonds, the usual market food, it's all there and it tastes better in the cold than it has any right to.
One thing worth being straight about: entry to both markets and match tickets aren't listed with prices in our sources, so don't assume either is free. Markets in Germany are usually open to wander without a ticket, but check before you build your budget around it, and get your match ticket sorted well ahead of the day rather than hoping for one on the gate.
Is this trip worth doing in November
Yes, and arguably better than going in December. You get proper Christmas market atmosphere without the December crush, plus a full Bundesliga match in the same day, which isn't something most Christmas market trips offer. The only real planning risk is the schedule itself: about 11.5 hours on the ground is enough for two markets and a match, but only if you don't dawdle over decisions about which mulled wine stall looks best.
Flights move daily and today's price is on the page, so it's worth checking that before you commit to the date. But as day trips go, this one packs in more than most: two Christmas markets, a top-flight football match, and you're home the same night.
