New Year's Day is the cheapest day to fly in the first weekend of 2027, with a middle fare of £119 against £207 on 2 January, and a day in Dublin from Glasgow on 1 January costs £73.85 all in.

If you want to start 2027 somewhere new, New Year's Day is the day to do it. Across 12 UK airports, the middle fare for a same-day return on Friday 1 January was £119. On Saturday 2 January it jumped to £207.
Everyone's either hungover or heading home, so the planes are cheap. That makes it a good day for one of our extreme day trips. Fly out in the morning, walk off the night before somewhere else, and be home for tea.
What are the cheapest New Year's Day trips?
Dublin dominates, and it's cheap from almost everywhere in the north.
- Glasgow to Dublin, £73.85 all in. £35.00 return, out at 07:35, home at 20:25, landing at 21:25. About 9.3 hours in the city. See Dublin from Glasgow on 1 January
- Edinburgh to Dublin, £79.85 all in. £41.00 return, out at 06:05, home at 20:50. The longest day here, about 11.2 hours.
- Manchester to Dublin, £80.85 all in. £42.00 return, out at 06:55, home at 18:35, back at 19:35. An early finish.
- Stansted to Dublin, £99.85 all in. £61.00 return, out at 06:45, home at 20:40, back at 22:00.

Pick by how much of the day you want. Edinburgh gives you the longest day, Glasgow the cheapest, and Manchester gets you home earliest, which you might be grateful for after the night before.
What about somewhere other than Dublin?
From London there are a few good ones.
- Stansted to Cologne, £118.65 all in. £80.00 return, out at 06:45, landing at 09:00. Home at 22:10, back at Stansted at 22:30. Over ten hours in the city.
- Luton to Amsterdam, £124.65 all in. £81.00 return, out at 06:15, landing at 08:40. Home at 21:00, back at 21:10. About 9.1 hours. See Amsterdam from Luton on 1 January

Will anything be open on New Year's Day?
This is the bit to plan for. Lots of shops, museums and attractions close or run shorter hours on 1 January, wherever you are. Check the opening times of anything you want to see before you book.
The good news is some of the best bits of these cities are just walks. Along the Liffey in Dublin, the canals in Amsterdam, the Rhine in Cologne. Add somewhere warm for lunch and that's all you need for a slow first day of the year.

Daylight on 1 January
Not very. Sunset in Dublin on 1 January is at 16:16, in Amsterdam at 16:37 and in Cologne at 16:34. Get out early and do your walking in the morning, then find somewhere warm for the afternoon.

Why bother?
Because it's cheap, it's quiet, and it beats lying on the sofa. A day somewhere different is a good way to start the year, and you're back in time for work on the Monday.
If you'd rather be away for the countdown itself, our New Year's Eve day trips get you home before midnight.

What does a day in Dublin cost?
£38.85 on the ground per person, whichever airport you fly from. That's £10.00 for Aircoach in and out, £5.00 for getting around, £9.60 for lunch and £14.25 for dinner. The Book of Kells at Trinity is €25 if it's open, and the National Gallery, National Museum and Phoenix Park are free.
Every fare here is from 2 November and they'll move before January, so book from the trip page, not from this article.
