Munich works better as a day trip than people think. The airport is a long way out, but the centre is small and walkable, and in December it's about as Christmassy as Europe gets. It's one of our cheaper extreme day trips to Germany right now.
What are the flight times from Gatwick to Munich?
easyJet leaves Gatwick at 06:10 and lands in Munich at 09:00 local time. Germany is an hour ahead, so the flight itself is under two hours. The flight home leaves at 20:55 and lands at Gatwick at 22:00.
Once you've done the train in, you're in the city from about 10:10 to 18:15. See the day trip to Munich from Gatwick
If Wednesday doesn't work, Tuesday 8 December is £69.00 return and £108.80 all in. It's out at 07:00, home at 21:25, and gives you about 7.8 hours.
How do you get from Munich airport into the city?
This is the one thing to get right. The airport is 35km out and the S-Bahn, the S1 or S8, takes about 40 minutes.
Buy the Airport-City-Day-Ticket. It's €17.50 and covers the airport and the whole city for the day, so you only buy one ticket. That's why transport is the biggest part of the day's cost.
How much does a day in Munich cost?
The trip page puts the ground cost at £39.80 per person.
- Transport for the day, including the airport, £15.00
- Lunch, £12.80
- Dinner, £12.00
Food in Munich is good value. A plate of something hearty at lunch, a pretzel later, and you'll barely touch the dinner budget.

What can you do in Munich for free?
- Marienplatz and the Glockenspiel on the New Town Hall tower
- Viktualienmarkt, the open-air food market next to Marienplatz, with stalls Monday to Saturday
- The Hofgarten
- The Englischer Garten
- BMW Welt, the showroom building next to the BMW Museum
Paid ones worth a look. The Deutsches Museum is €16 and is huge, the Munich Residence is €10, the BMW Museum is €17 and closed on Mondays, and the Frauenkirche south tower is €7.50 for the view over the old town.
Is there a Christmas market in Munich in December?
Yes, there's one on Marienplatz, right in the middle of town. Check our Munich Christmas markets page for the markets and their dates before you go.
Sunset on 9 December is at 16:19. So do the Englischer Garten and the tower while it's light, then Marienplatz and the market after dark.
How would I spend the day?
S-Bahn in to Marienplatz. Catch the Glockenspiel, then wander through Viktualienmarkt and grab lunch there, it's a Wednesday so the stalls are open. In the afternoon, either the Deutsches Museum or a long walk up through the Hofgarten into the Englischer Garten. Back to Marienplatz as it gets dark.
Head for the S-Bahn by about 18:15. It's 40 minutes to the airport, and the trip page allows proper time for security and passport checks.
Anything else to know?
- Wear proper shoes. Between Marienplatz, the market and the parks you'll do a lot of walking.
- Take a layer. December evenings at the market get cold once the sun's gone.
- Go hand luggage only. A small bag that fits under the seat keeps the fare at £66.00.
Is Munich worth it as a day trip?
For £105.80, yes. Under £40.00 on the ground, an easy centre, and you don't need to plan much. Just get the right ticket at the airport and the rest falls into place.
