Local tips
Tip from a local, checked by us.
Get a TFI Leap Card as soon as you can. An adult journey is €2.00 and that covers 90 minutes across Dublin city buses, the Luas and most DART and commuter trains. Once you've spent €6.00 in a day you stop paying. Tap on every single time, and on the DART and trains tap off at the end too, at the gates or the poles on the platform, or you'll pay more. Leap Cards are sold in selected shops and ticket machines, or online at leapcard.ie.
Two free ones worth knowing. The Chester Beatty museum and library is free, but it's closed on Mondays from November to February. The GPO on O'Connell Street is worth seeing, but the GPO Witness History museum inside is paid, €15.00 online or €17.00 on the door, so book it ahead if you want it.
Got time to spare? Get out of the city. The DART and commuter trains run up the coast to Howth, Malahide, Portmarnock, Donabate, Skerries and Balbriggan, and on to Laytown and Drogheda, and your Leap Card works the whole way. A Leap single from the city centre is €3.90 to Skerries and €6.00 to Drogheda.
Checked on 31 October 2026 with TFI, Irish Rail, the Chester Beatty and the GPO museum.
