Vienna or Bratislava for a Christmas Market Day Trip? We Costed Both
For a Christmas market day trip from Stansted, Bratislava on Friday 27 November costs about £126 all in with 7 hours in the city. Vienna on Saturday 28 November is about £160 with 8.3 hours. Flights £79 and £99, checked on Google Flights on 2 October 2026.

They're about an hour apart, everyone says you should do both, and on a day trip you can't. So which one? We costed both from Stansted, same weekend, same rules.
Flight prices are the cheapest same-day return on Google Flights for that exact date, checked on 2 October 2026. Fares move daily, so the trip pages show today's number. Ground costs are our own data: airport transfer both ways, local transport, lunch and dinner.
Is Bratislava or Vienna better?
For the money, Bratislava. For the markets, Vienna. That's the short version. The long version is below, and it mostly comes down to whether you'd rather have £34 in your pocket or an extra hour and a bit in a bigger, prettier city.
Side by side
Bratislava, Friday 27 November. Flight £79. Land 10:55, leave the old town at 18:55 for the 21:05 flight home. About 7 hours in the city. About £47 on the ground. Roughly £126 all in.
Vienna, Saturday 28 November. Flight £99, out at 06:10. Land 09:20, leave the centre at 18:30 for the 20:35 flight. About 8.3 hours in the city. About £61 on the ground. Roughly £160 all in.
Both get dark just after 16:00 at the end of November and both average about 6°C, according to our trip pages. So no difference there. Bring a coat to either.

Christmas markets in Vienna and Bratislava
Vienna wins this, and it isn't close. The Christkindlmarkt on Rathausplatz, in front of the City Hall, is open 10:00 to 22:00 every day. Freyung is the oldest, running since 1772, with Advent music from 16:00. Am Hof is smaller and more local. Spittelberg is the arts and crafts one in the cobbled lanes, open 11:00 to 21:30 at weekends. You could fill the whole day just walking between them.

Bratislava has two squares in the old town, the Main Square and Hviezdoslav Square, a few minutes' walk apart and open 10:00 to 22:00 from 26 November. That's it. It's lovely, and you'll have seen it properly in a couple of hours. Then you've got an old town, a castle on a hill and a Blue Church to fill the rest. Both cities' markets run well into December. Rathausplatz closes on 26 December. Bratislava's runs to 3 January but shuts on 24 and 25 December, so check before you book a Christmas Eve visit.

The food and drink
Bratislava's stalls are where you try lokše, the Slovak potato pancake, varené víno, the local mulled wine, and medovina, honey mead. Vienna does the classic Christmas market spread, with Glühwein and Punsch at every square. Neither city publishes stall prices officially, so we don't quote them. What we can tell you is our cost data has a day's lunch and dinner at £40 in Bratislava and £50 in Vienna.
Getting into town
Bratislava: a city bus from the airport, about £2 there and back on our cost data. Vienna: the S7 train, about £6 there and back. Both are easy. Vienna's airport is further out, which is part of why its day costs more.
Can you do both in one day?
You can get between them in about an hour, so people try. Don't. You'd lose a good chunk of a 7 or 8 hour day on a train, and you'd see two cities badly instead of one properly. Pick one, and save the other for another Saturday.
Which one we'd pick
First time doing a Christmas market and you want the full postcard? Vienna, and accept the extra £34. Want a cheap, easy day with a market, a castle and a mulled wine, without the crowds of a big capital? Bratislava. If it was our money this year, Bratislava. Vienna will still be there next year.
Doing Bratislava? Here's our hour-by-hour Bratislava day.
Practical tips for the day
Book the early flight. Vienna's 06:10 gets you in at 09:20, and it's dark just after 16:00, so the morning is your daylight. The market's better after dark anyway, so do the sightseeing first and the stalls last.
Both cities use the euro, so there's no swapping currency between them. Contactless works fine for transport and most food, but carry a bit of cash for the stalls just in case.
Check what your fare includes. The cheapest Ryanair prices on Google Flights don't include a big cabin bag. On a day trip you don't need one, so travel light and that £79 or £99 stays £79 or £99.
Is the Bratislava Christmas market worth it?
For a day trip, yes. A £79 flight, two squares of stalls, a castle on the hill and a walkable old town. It's not trying to be Vienna, and that's fine. If you've done Vienna or Prague already and want something calmer, it's a good shout.
Which Christmas market is best in Austria?
Vienna's Rathausplatz is the one most people mean, and it's the one you can actually do in a day from the UK for under £100 on the flight. Freyung is the oldest and Spittelberg the prettiest for crafts, and they're all in walking distance of each other.
What are the top 3 Christmas markets in Europe?
Everyone's list is different, and most of them ignore what it costs to get there. Zagreb keeps winning the awards. Vienna's the postcard. Bratislava's the bargain. We put together every Christmas market day trip we could find with a flight under £100, prices checked.
Visiting in December or on Christmas Day?
Rathausplatz runs to 26 December and closes at 18:30 on Christmas Eve. Am Hof, Freyung and Spittelberg finish on 23 December. Schönbrunn Palace's market runs to 6 January and is free to get into. Bratislava's market runs to 3 January but shuts on 24 and 25 December, so no, it isn't a Christmas Day trip. We've only checked late November flights so far, so check the trip pages for December prices.
