Ten hours in Bratislava, Slovakia, for a £77 flight. The Christmas market opens the night before you land, so you get it on day two, lights up, stalls stocked, and none of the opening night crush.
Is Bratislava's Christmas market worth it?
For a day trip, yes. It's smaller than Vienna or Prague, and that's the point. Two squares in the old town, a few minutes' walk apart, and it's all walking distance, no map or tram ticket needed. The flight's cheaper too. Prague's opening weekend was £125 from Stansted when we checked on 1 October. Bratislava's £77.
Getting there
Ryanair from Stansted, out at 07:45 and landing at 10:55. £77 is the cheapest same-day return on Google Flights for Friday 27 November, checked on 1 October 2026. Fares move daily, so check before you book. From the airport it's a city bus into town, and our cost data has that at £2 there and back.
What to do in Bratislava in one day
10:55. Land and get the bus into the old town.
12:00. Main Square, Hlavné námestie. The market's open from 10:00, so it's in full swing when you get there. First stop is lokše, the Slovak potato pancake, and a cup of varené víno, the local mulled wine. Nobody official publishes stall prices, so we're not going to guess them. Call it lunch.
13:30. Walk it off. The old town's small, so the Old Town Hall, Michael's Tower and the lanes round St Martin's Cathedral are all easy on foot. Michael's Tower is €6 if you want the view from the top.
14:30. Up to the castle. The grounds, the Baroque gardens and the courtyard are free. The museum inside is €14, and we'd skip it. The view over the Danube from the walls is the reason to climb the hill, and that bit costs nothing.
16:00. It's dark by about now at the end of November, so head to the Blue Church on the edge of the old town. Pale blue, looks like it's been iced, free to look at.

17:00. Back to the markets, Hviezdoslav Square this time as well. This is what you came for: the trees lit up, medovina, which is honey mead, and a trdelník to finish. Both squares are open till 22:00.

19:00. Dinner, then the airport. Our cost data puts dinner at £30, which feels steep for Bratislava, so if you've grazed the stalls all afternoon, skip the sit-down meal and keep the change. Leave the centre with plenty of time for a 21:05 flight.
What to eat and drink
This is a tasting day as much as a market day. Lokše are the thing to try, a thin local Slovak potato pancake with something rolled up inside. Varené víno is the local mulled wine. Medovina is honey mead, and it goes down easier than it should, so pace yourself if you've got a flight to catch. Trdelník, the sugar-rolled pastry, is everywhere. Nobody official publishes stall prices, so we don't quote them.
Is Bratislava a cheap city?
Once you've landed, cheaper than its neighbours. Our cost data has a day on the ground in Bratislava at about £47, against £61 for Vienna.
Flight £77. On the ground about £47: £2 for the bus in and out, £5 local transport, £10 lunch, £30 dinner. Add £3 for a coffee or a pint. Stall food and the castle museum are extra. About £124 all in, less if you swap dinner for the stalls.
Good to know
The markets run through the festive season, 26 November to 3 January, 10:00 to 22:00 every day, but they're closed on 24 and 25 December. So no, it isn't a Christmas Day trip.
Vienna and Bratislava are about an hour apart, so plenty of people try to do both. On a day trip, don't. Pick one and do it properly.
