Christmas Flights: UK to Thailand

Looking for flights from the UK to Thailand? You’re not alone. Around 10–15% of Brits are hunting for a last-minute Christmas flights to Bangkok and are wanting to escape to Southeast Asia. And honestly, I get it. It’s freezing, dark by 4pm, and that alone is reason enough to leave. Trust me, that’s exactly why I did.

Tropical islands, white beaches, soaking up the winter sun with some pad thai for pennies and a fresh coconut instead of battling Tesco on Christmas Eve. Sounds like a dream. The only catch is the flights, and yes, you might have to emotionally prepare yourself before checking prices.

Christmas flights to Thailand are not cheap. Demand goes through the roof, availability tightens fast, and suddenly your “spontaneous escape” starts looking like a committed financial decision. But if you know what you’re getting into and plan it right, it can still be worth it. Let’s talk about what prices actually look like and how to avoid getting completely rinsed. Flights are one way unless said otherwise.

Flights, Dates and Prices

The best flight I could find is departing Manchester at 07:50, it takes 17h 50m total with 1 stop in Istanbul. It's a self transfer in Istanbul but with a 4.5h layover, I don't see this as an issue, especially if you have just a backpack. The total is £485.00.

I battled with a few options for this day, depending on how tight you are on a budget, you could save £70 in exchange for a 44h total trip. sounds scary but you have 17 hours in Istanbul, you could use this to your advantage and explore the city for the night. Although this is something I would do, I know it's not everyone's cup of tea. This option is £469.00 departing at 14:15.

The mid -priced flight isn't overly quick either, 23h total and 3 layovers in total... Ouch. This departs at 11:30, stops in Istanbul, Kuwait and Abu Dhabi. For a total of £31 more, I'd much prefer option 1, above.

The quickest but not the most expensive way arrive in Thailand is through IndiGo with a snappy 1.2h layover in Mumbai, your overall time to arrive is 15h 10 at a not so beautiful price of £616.00. However you can do a very similar route with Qatar for £751.00!

Flying with an airline I've actually never heard of, Hainan. This flight is semi respectable comparing them to others within this list. Departure from Manchester at 11:15 with an overall time of 19h 45m and 2 layover in Beijing the total cost is £480.00. By far the most financially responsible flight for this date.

I only planned to do the few days running up to Christmas, but I did come across this one flight, which is pretty brutal at 40h but if you planned it right, you could save yourself a nice little chunk. This flight departs Manchester at 14:15 and arrives in Istanbul at 21:00. You have a huge 17 hours here! You can pick up a semi-decent hotel for £17 in the city which can be used to your advantage and explore what potentially is a new city for you.

It also gets better, your 2nd and 3rd flight are with Cathay Pacific and travel through the Middle East and Hong Kong, guaranteed luxury. This is something which would tickle my pickle. Whats best is the flight is £320.00.

So, what type of person are you? Someone who'll pay £751.00 to Qatar and arrive in less than 16h or are you the type of person who'll spend £320 to arrive 40h and make the most of new cities in between? I'm keen to hear, DM on Instagram.
