Krakow Christmas Market Day Trip: Your Questions Answered
Kraków's Christmas market on the Main Square traditionally runs from late November to 1 January. The 2026 dates aren't announced yet. Ryanair from Luton on Monday 7 December 2026 was £95 return on Google Flights on 10 October, with about 9.3 hours in Kraków.

Kraków's Christmas market is one of the most searched-for in Europe, and it's easy to see why. It fills the Main Square, one of the biggest medieval squares in Europe, with the Cloth Hall in the middle and St Mary's Basilica on the corner. Here are the questions people ask us about doing it in a day.
Quick info
- Where: Rynek Główny, the Main Market Square, around the Cloth Hall
- When: traditionally late November to 1 January. 2026 dates not announced yet
- Hours: about 10:00 to 20:00, food stalls later (travel guides, not official)
- Entry: free
- Flight we checked: Luton, Monday 7 December, £95 return
- Time in Kraków: about 9.3 hours
- Whole day: about £126 a person
Does Kraków have a Christmas market?
Yes. The main one is on Rynek Główny, the Main Square, with wooden stalls around the Cloth Hall. There are smaller ones too, including on Mały Rynek just behind it and in the Kazimierz district.
When is the Kraków Christmas market 2026?
The city hasn't announced the 2026 dates yet. It traditionally opens in late November and runs to 1 January. Travel guides list the stalls as open about 10:00 to 20:00, with food stalls open later, around 22:00. Check the dates before you book, but an early December trip is safely inside the season.
How do you get to Kraków for a day from the UK?
Ryanair from Luton on Monday 7 December leaves at 06:20 and lands at 09:45. The flight home leaves at 22:20 and lands at Luton at 23:55. £95 return on Google Flights, checked on 10 October 2026.
From Kraków airport, buses 209 and 300 run into the city. We allow about £4 for the bus both ways.

How long do you get in Kraków?
About 9.3 hours, from about 10:30 to 19:50. Sunset is at 15:40, so more than four of those hours are under the lights. That's when the square is at its best.
A guide to the market on the Main Market Square
The stalls run round the Cloth Hall, the long Renaissance trading hall in the middle of the square, with St Mary's Basilica and its two towers on the corner. Expect wooden huts selling glass baubles, wooden toys, amber, wool, sheepskin slippers and Polish pottery, plus a lot of food. There's usually a big Christmas tree and a stage, and in recent years choirs and folk groups have played through the season.
It's not a huge market by German standards, but the setting is hard to beat. Come back after dark, when the Cloth Hall and the basilica are lit up.
Regional food to try at the Kraków Christmas market
Pierogi first, the Polish dumplings, filled with anything from potato and cheese to meat or sauerkraut and mushroom. Then oscypek, the smoked mountain cheese, grilled and served with cranberry. Wash it down with grzaniec, hot mulled wine or beer. It's cold enough to need it.

What else can you do in Kraków in one day?
- Wawel Royal Castle, on the hill above the river, about £19 for the main route
- Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory, about £12, and free on Mondays, which our day is
- The Rynek Underground museum under the square, about £9
- St Mary's Basilica, about £4, and listen for the trumpet call from the tower on the hour
- Walk the Planty park round the old town and on to Kazimierz, the old Jewish quarter, both free
Our plan: the square and the market late morning, Wawel and lunch, then the free Monday at Schindler's Factory in the afternoon and back to the market after dark.
Is there ice skating in Kraków at Christmas?
There's usually a rink in the city each winter, but locations and dates change and the 2026 ones aren't out. If skating matters, check once the city publishes the programme in November.
How cold is Kraków in December?
Very. Poland's weather service gives Kraków an average December high of 2.7C and a low of minus 3.4C (1991 to 2020), with precipitation on about 16 days and only about 32 hours of sunshine all month. Hat, gloves, a proper coat and warm boots.
How much does the day cost?
About £126 a person. That's the £95 flight plus about £31 on the ground: £4 for the bus, £4 for local transport, £5 for lunch and £18 for dinner. Kraków is one of the cheapest cities in Europe to eat in.
Tips for the best experience
- Get to the square before lunch, when it's quieter, then come back after sunset at 15:40 for the lights
- Poland uses the złoty, not the euro. Carry a little cash for small stalls
- Monday is the day for Schindler's Factory, because entry is free
- Look up Wawel tickets online before you go, so you don't queue in the cold
- Wear boots with grip. The square's cobbles get slippery when it's icy
Other Polish Christmas markets
Poland is one of the best countries in Europe for a Christmas market day trip, because flights are cheap and so is everything on the ground. Wrocław's market opens on 20 November 2026 and runs into January, and Gdańsk's runs 20 November to 23 December. Both have flights from London.
Is Kraków or Wrocław better for a Christmas market?
Kraków for the bigger square and the history. Wrocław for a more fairy-tale market, and it opens earlier, on 20 November. Both are great value.
