- Wrocław, Sunday 22 November: £60 flight, about £91 all day
- Budapest, Monday 16 November: £61 flight, about £93 all day
- Cologne, Monday 16 November: £69 flight, about £115 all day
- Vienna, Thursday 19 November: £65 flight, about £133 all day
1. Wrocław: the cheapest Christmas market day trip from Stansted
Out at 08:55, landing at 11:55. Home at 22:40, landing at Stansted at 23:55. You're in the old town at about 12:55 and leave at about 20:30, so about 7.6 hours in the city. Sunset is 15:58, so most of your day is under the lights.
The market runs from 20 November 2026 to 7 January 2027, 10:00 to 21:00 daily, free. It fills the Rynek, Plac Solny and Świdnicka street. It closes on 24 and 25 December and 1 January. On the ground we allow about £31: £2 for the airport bus, £5 for trams, £10 for lunch and £14 for dinner.

2. Budapest: two big markets, one day
Out at 06:00, landing at 09:25. Home at 20:40, landing at 22:15. You're in the centre at about 10:35 and leave at about 17:45, so about 7.2 hours. Sunset is 16:09.
Advent Bazilika in front of St Stephen's Basilica and the Vörösmarty Square market both open on 13 November 2026. On a Monday the Basilica market runs 11:00 to 22:00. Ground costs are about £32: £4 for the 200E bus and metro both ways, £7 for local transport, £8 for lunch and £13 for dinner. If you want one big extra, the Széchenyi baths are about £32.

3. Cologne: opening day at the cathedral
Out at 07:00, landing at 09:15. Home at 20:45, landing at 21:05. That return is £69. There's an earlier flight home at 14:10 that makes it £57, but it cuts your day to a morning, so we wouldn't. You're in the city at about 09:50 and leave at about 18:30, so about 8.7 hours. Sunset is 16:45.
Monday 16 November 2026 is opening day for Markt der Herzen, the market by Cologne Cathedral. It runs 11:00 to 21:00 Sunday to Wednesday. The big Heumarkt market doesn't open until 23 November, so this is the day for the cathedral market on its first day. Ground costs are about £46: £6 for the S-Bahn both ways, £8 for local transport, £13 for lunch and £19 for dinner. The cathedral tower climb is about £7.

The Christkindlmarkt on Rathausplatz opens on 13 November 2026, 10:00 to 22:00 daily. Am Hof opens the same day and the Freyung market, Vienna's oldest, running since 1772, opens on 14 November with Advent music from 16:00. Vienna is the priciest on the ground at about £68: £10 for the Railjet both ways, £8 for transport, £16 for lunch and £34 for dinner.

What else is there to do in each city?
You'll have hours to spare around the markets. This is what we'd do with them.
Wrocław: the Rynek is the market, so walk on to Ostrów Tumski, the cathedral island, as the lamps come on. Hunting for the little bronze dwarfs around the old town is free and more fun than it sounds. The Panorama Racławicka, a huge circular painting, is about £10 if it rains.
Budapest: walk the Danube embankment, past the Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial, and cross the Chain Bridge to the Buda side. Gellért Hill is free and the view is the best in the city. The Széchenyi baths are about £32 and worth it in November.
Cologne: climb the cathedral tower for about £7, then walk over the Hohenzollern Bridge with its love locks to the Rheinboulevard for the view back. The Chocolate Museum is about £15 if you've got time.
Vienna: walk the Ringstrasse, then the Belvedere gardens, both free. If you only pay for one thing, the Kunsthistorisches Museum is about £19. Naschmarkt is good for lunch, and it's open on a Thursday.
What should you eat and drink at each market?
- Wrocław: grzaniec, Polish mulled wine, and pierogi from the stalls on the Rynek
- Budapest: forralt bor, Hungarian mulled wine, and chimney cake (kürtőskalács) baked over coals
- Cologne: Glühwein in the market's own mug, and Reibekuchen, crispy potato pancakes with apple sauce
- Vienna: Punsch and Glühwein, plus roasted chestnuts and baked potatoes on Rathausplatz
At most German and Austrian markets you pay a deposit on the mug and get it back when you return it, or keep it as a souvenir.
Tips for a Christmas market day trip from Stansted Airport
- Take hand luggage only. A small bag that fits under the seat means no queues and no bag fees
- Book the earliest train or coach to Stansted, or park. A 06:00 flight means being at the airport by about 05:00
- Download the airport bus or train ticket app for your city before you go
- Carry a little local cash for the smaller stalls. Hungary and Poland don't use the euro
- Check the market's opening time on the day. Most open late morning, so there's time for the city first
Which one should you pick?
For the cheapest day, Wrocław. For the most time and the most markets, Vienna. For two big markets on one day, Budapest. For a German cathedral market on its first day, Cologne.
Why are these dates in November?
Because that's where the cheap flights are. Fares on these routes climb in December, and some of the markets are already open by mid November. Going early also means smaller crowds.
