Switzerland in a Day From the UK: Geneva, Zurich or Basel?
The cheapest day trip to Switzerland from the UK is Basel from Gatwick on 16 December 2026: £52 return plus about £51 on the ground, £103 all in (checked 18 October 2026). Zurich from Luton is £119 and Geneva from Gatwick is £134. Geneva costs the most on the ground at about £73.
Everyone says Switzerland is expensive. To live in, sure. For one day, with a packed lunch in your bag and a cheap flight, it's no dearer than Paris. We compared the three cities you can actually do in a day from the UK.
Basel: the cheapest
Gatwick to Basel on Wed 16 Dec: £52 return with easyJet, out 07:45, back 21:20, home 21:55. 10.9 hours there, £103 all in.
Basel's airport sits on the French border and the day costs about £51 by our costing: transport for the day (£9), lunch and dinner, and a coffee. December is Christmas market season on Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz. From Stansted the same day is £96, but you fly home into Gatwick.
Zurich: the middle
Luton to Zurich on Tue 15 Dec: £58 return, out 08:05, back 20:20, 9.5 hours there, £119 all in. The day on the ground is about £61.
Geneva: the priciest day, the best views
- Gatwick, Mon 9 Nov: £61 flight, £134 all in, 11.8 hours.
- Manchester, Thu 31 Dec: £64 flight, £137 all in. New Year's Eve, home by 21:35.
- Bristol, Mon 7 Dec: £69 flight, £142 all in.
- Edinburgh, Mon 7 Dec: £76 flight, £149 all in.
Geneva's day costs about £73 on the ground, the most of the three, mostly because lunch (£24) and dinner (£40) are Swiss prices. Walking the lake to the Jet d'Eau and the old town costs nothing.
How to keep it cheap: eat a big lunch from a supermarket, have dinner at the airport or on the plane, and Switzerland comes in under £100 for the day.
