Prague Christmas Markets: A Costed Day Trip from the UK

Right, before anyone books this off the headline alone: if you're flying out on Saturday 21 November 2026, the big one isn't open. Wenceslas Square Christmas Market doesn't start until 28 November. Turn up on the 21st expecting mulled wine under the statue of good old Wenceslas and you'll just find a square. Náměstí Míru market is running that day though, 10:00-20:00, so that's your move if you're on the Manchester flight.

If your dates are flexible, or you're going after 28 November, you get both markets. If you're stuck with the 21st, one market, a full day of free sights, and a decent lunch is still a fair day out. Here's the actual cost of it.

Getting there and the clock you're working with

Manchester to Prague on Saturday 21 November: out at 06:25, lands about 09:30 local time, home flight at 21:40, back in the UK by 22:55. That gives you about 12 hours on the ground.

From the airport it's bus plus metro, about 35 minutes, €2. Grab a 24-hour transport ticket for €5 rather than paying per journey, you'll be on and off trams and the metro all day and it pays for itself fast.

The cost breakdown

Bus to the centre and back: £4. Local transport for the day (covered by that day ticket, roughly): £4. Lunch: £7. Dinner before the flight home: £14. A coffee or a pint somewhere along the way: £2. That's about £29 on the ground, plus £2 if you stop for a coffee or a pint, not counting flights.

None of the Christmas market entry prices are published for either market, so budget for mulled wine, food stalls and whatever trinkets catch your eye rather than a ticket cost.

What to actually do with 12 hours

Landed at 09:30, on the metro by 10:00-ish, you could realistically be at Náměstí Míru not long after 10:30, half an hour after it opens. Wander it properly, it's smaller and more local-feeling than the big Old Town setup, grab a mulled wine, don't rush.

From there it's worth crossing into Old Town proper for the free stuff. Old Town Square has the Astronomical Clock with its hourly show, and it costs nothing to stand and watch the crowd crane their necks at it. If you fancy the view from the tower itself, that's CZK 350 for Old Town Hall tower and the clock close-up.

Charles Bridge is free and worth the walk, statues either side, decent river views. If you've got energy left, Petřín Hill gives you the walk up from Malá Strana and views over the city for nothing, or Letná Park does a similar job looking back over the Vltava bridges.

Prague Castle is CZK 300 if you want the interiors, but the courtyards and Royal Garden are free to walk round, and that might be enough if you're watching the budget and the clock.

What we'd skip, and what we'd do instead

The Jewish Museum in Prague is CZK 600, easily the priciest single thing on this list, and on a day trip with under 12 hours you probably don't have the time to give it properly anyway. Save it for a longer trip.

We'd skip trying to do both Prague Castle interiors and a market crawl in one day, you'll end up rushing both. Pick the market, pick one paid landmark, and let the free stuff (the bridge, the square, one of the hill viewpoints) fill in the rest. It's a Christmas market trip first, not a castle tour.

Dinner before the flight home is where the £14 goes, sit down somewhere near a metro stop rather than cutting it fine in the airport. With a 21:40 flight you've got more slack than most day trips, use it.
