Munich Christmas Market Day Trip 2026: Marienplatz for £125
The Munich Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz runs 20 November to 24 December 2026. easyJet from Gatwick on Monday 30 November was £125 return on Google Flights on 12 October, giving nearly nine hours in Munich. Budget about £172 for the whole day.

Munich's big Christmas market sits on Marienplatz, right under the New Town Hall. It's one of the oldest in Germany and it's the one people mean when they say they want a proper Bavarian Christmas.
You don't need a hotel for it. There's an early flight out of Gatwick and a late one back, and that gives you nearly nine hours in the city.
When is the Munich Christmas market in 2026?
The Christkindlmarkt on Marienplatz runs from 20 November to 24 December 2026. It's open 10:00 to 21:00 Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 20:00 on Sundays, and 10:00 to 14:00 on Christmas Eve. That's from the official market site and the City of Munich.
There's also a nativity market, the Kripperlmarkt, by the Alter Peter church just off the square. The city says it keeps the same hours as the main market.
Where is the Marienplatz Christmas market?
Right in the middle of the old town, on Marienplatz in front of the New Town Hall, and it spreads out into the streets around the square during the season. It's the traditional heart of Christmas in Bavaria, and the S-Bahn drops you underneath it.
The flights
easyJet from Gatwick on Monday 30 November leaves at 06:15 and lands in Munich at 09:05. The flight home leaves at 20:50 and lands at Gatwick at 21:55. £125 return on Google Flights, checked on 12 October 2026.

- 09:05: land. Buy the Airport-City-Day-Ticket, €17.50, and take the S1 or S8
- About 10:00: up the steps at Marienplatz. The market is right there

- 18:45: S-Bahn back to the airport
- 20:50: fly home
That's nearly nine hours in Munich, and the airport train is covered by the day ticket both ways.
What does the day cost?
About £172 a person. That's the £125 flight and about £47 on the ground: £15 for the day ticket, £16 for lunch, £16 for dinner and £5 for a coffee or a beer. The market food is cheaper than sitting down, so you can bring that down if you graze.
Is Munich worth it for a Christmas market day trip?
We think so. The market is in the middle of the old town, so you're never far from it, and the city is easy to walk. The flights are what make it work. A 06:15 start is brutal, but you get a full day and you're home before 23:00.
Is the Munich Christmas market free?
Yes. Marienplatz is a public square and there's no ticket to get in. You pay for what you eat and drink, and for the mug deposit on your Glühwein.
What to eat and drink at the Munich Christmas market
- Glühwein: hot mulled wine, the drink of every German Christmas market
- Feuerzangenbowle: mulled wine with a rum-soaked sugar cone set alight over the top
- Bratwurst in a bread roll, the easy lunch
- Lebkuchen: soft spiced gingerbread, often sold in hearts with icing messages
- Gebrannte Mandeln: sugar-roasted almonds in a paper cone
- Kartoffelpuffer: potato pancakes with apple sauce
We'd skip a sit-down lunch and eat your way round the stalls. It's cheaper and it's half the fun of a German market.
Other Christmas markets in Munich
Marienplatz is the big one, but it's not the only one. There's the nativity market by the Alter Peter church, a Christmas village in the courtyard of the Residenz, a medieval market on Wittelsbacherplatz, and the Tollwood winter festival on Theresienwiese. Official 2026 dates for all of them weren't out when we checked, so look them up closer to the time before you plan around one.
How do you get from Munich Airport to Marienplatz?
The S1 and S8 S-Bahn lines both run from the airport to Marienplatz in about 40 minutes. The Airport-City-Day-Ticket at €17.50 covers the train in and out and every train, tram and bus in the city until 06:00 the next morning. Buy it from the machines at the airport station.
What's Munich like in late November?
Cold. Expect a coat, gloves and hat kind of day, and it gets dark before 17:00. The good news is that the market looks best after dark, and you'll be there for it.
Tips
- Monday was the cheapest day we found for this route
- Wear proper shoes. Marienplatz gets packed from late afternoon
- Most stalls take a deposit on the mug. Keep it as a souvenir or hand it back
- Leave the airport a full hour. Munich is a big airport
