Gdańsk Christmas Market Opening Day: 2026 Day Trip Guide

Searching "Gdansk Christmas market opening" because you want to actually be there for day one? Good news: opening day is Friday 20 November 2026, and it lines up with a day trip almost perfectly. Land at about 11:30, the market opens at 12:00, and your flight home isn't until 19:35.

No faffing about wondering if it's even started yet. This is the one day of the year you can turn up and know for certain the whole thing is properly running, not half-built with stallholders still unloading crates.

What opening day actually looks like

The market runs 12:00 to 21:00 on the 20th, so with about 8 hours on the ground you get a few hours of daylight and then the rest of your time with it lit up after dark. That's the good stretch, if we're honest. Christmas markets in daylight are fine, but they're built for the dark. Fairy lights, mulled wine steam rising off cups, the whole atmosphere clicks into place once the sun's gone.

First couple of hours

Landing at 11:30 puts you at the market not long after it opens for the season, which means smaller crowds early on and stallholders who haven't yet had eight hours of tourists asking where the toilets are. Worth using that first hour or two for a proper look round before the evening crowd builds.

This is also the window to eat. Polish street food at a Christmas market is genuinely good, pierogi, kielbasa, the lot, and it's better tackled with an appetite rather than after you've already necked two mulled wines and lost the will to queue.

The dark stretch

Once the light goes, expect the market to properly fill up. Locals finishing work, other tourists who've done the same maths as you, everyone converging for the atmosphere bit. This is when it's worth having already scoped out the stalls you want to go back to, because shuffling through a packed market trying to remember where that one stall with the decent hot wine was is nobody's idea of a good time.

The market's centred on Targ Węglowy, the Coal Market, right by the old town, so you won't need to trek far between stalls.

Beyond the market itself

Gdańsk's Old Town is worth a wander even if you've had your fill of gingerbread and grzaniec. The old town streets and waterfront area near the market are the obvious pull, especially with Christmas lights up around them. It's a compact enough centre that getting lost isn't really a risk.

If you fancy warming up somewhere that isn't a market stall, a proper sit-down coffee or a beer in one of the old town bars gives your feet a break before the last push back for your flight.

Getting the timing right

With about 8 hours on the ground and the flight home at 19:35, don't get so deep into mulled wine that you lose track of time. Give yourself a proper buffer to get back for the return leg, especially since you'll be doing it in the dark and possibly in a slight grzaniec haze.
