What is the cheapest day trip abroad in January 2027?
Tirana at £64.15, on Wednesday 13 January. After that it is Wroclaw at £66.50 on Saturday 23 January, Shannon at £68.00 on both the 9th and the 23rd, Wroclaw again at £68.50 on the 9th and Dublin at £70.85 on the 23rd. Every one of those is under seventy five quid for a full day in another country.

Is it cheaper midweek or on a Saturday in January?
Both, and it depends what you are optimising for. The single cheapest day we found is a Wednesday, but Saturdays give you far more to choose from. On Saturday 9 January the board had 45 cities and on Saturday 23 January it had 43, while Wednesday 13 January had 24. So midweek wins on price by a few pounds and Saturday wins on choice by nearly double.
Where can you get winter sun in a day in January?
More places than you would think. Malaga is £72.30, Gran Canaria is £77.40 with five and a half hours on the ground, Alicante is £77.75, Faro is £80.25, Lanzarote is £83.00 and Seville is £87.25. None of those is beach weather in the sunbathing sense, but they are all a long way warmer than standing in a UK January.

How many hours do you actually get in January?
Anything from five to nine and a half, and the gap matters more than a few pounds does. Dublin on Wednesday 13 January gives you 9 hours 25 minutes. Wroclaw on the 23rd gives you 7 hours 45. At the other end, Dublin on Saturday 23 January is only 5 hours 5 minutes, and Gran Canaria is 5 hours 30 for a four hour flight each way. Always check the hours before you book on price alone.

Which airport has the most January day trips?
Stansted, comfortably. It turns up in most of the cheapest January days on the board, usually flying out of Stansted and home into Luton or Gatwick rather than back to where you started. That is worth planning for, because it means a different train home than the one you came on.

Why is January so much cheaper?
Because everyone has just spent their money. Compare it with what we were seeing over Christmas, where Alicante from Manchester hit £131 on Boxing Day and £211 by the 29th, against £52 in mid December. January fares drop back to the floor and stay there until half term starts pushing them up again in February.

What is the catch with a January day trip?
Daylight, mostly. You land, it is grey, and by half past four it is dark again, so a city you were planning to walk around is a city you are now looking at in the dark. Pick places where the indoor bits are the point, or go south where the sun is still up at six.

How do I find the cheapest January date for my airport?
Search your own airport and the dates you can actually take off, because the cheap days move. Fares in this article were checked between 21 October and 3 November and they will have moved since. Everything is on the day trips board, and founders pay £19 a year to see every date costed six months out.
