Flights to Southeast Asia in February are usually more expensive than January. Fewer sales, less airline panic, and way more people fleeing winter like it’s a sinking ship. Direct flights get pricey fast, and even “budget” routes start acting premium.

However, after digging through dates, routes, and some properly painful layovers, one pattern kept showing up over and over again: Istanbul. February’s cheapest routes almost always pass through it. Not Paris, not Frankfurt, not the flashy Gulf hubs. Istanbul is where prices quietly drop.

Flight Option 1: £173 to Bangkok (Cheapest Overall)

This isn't my favourite option as the layover in Mumbai might push your limits, but it'll be adrenaline filled to say the least.

Leg 1: London Stansted to Istanbul

You’ll fly from London Stansted into Sabiha Gökçen Airport on the Asian side of Istanbul. It’s about 40 km from the centre and roughly 90 minutes by bus, but here’s the good bit: you’ve got almost 21 hours. That’s not a layover, that’s a mini trip. Plenty of time to wander, drink raki, watch some questionable belly dancing, and demolish a few kebabs like a professional.

Accommodation is stupidly cheap. You can grab a hotel for under £25 or a hostel for under £15, crash properly, then roll back to the airport fed, rested, and feeling smug about how little you spent.

Leg 2: Istanbul to Mumbai (overnight)

This overnight flight drops you into Mumbai with a long layover. Mumbai Airport sits roughly 20–25 km from central areas, and getting around is cheap using local trains or Uber if you pick your timings wisely.

Real talk though. Mumbai is hectic. Traffic jams are normal, trains are RAMMED, and nothing moves quickly just because you want it to. But don’t let that scare you off. With nearly 11 hours, you can still cover a lot, and for most people, that’s more than enough time to get a proper taste of the city without it tipping into chaos.

Leg 3: Mumbai to Bangkok

This is your final leg, and while you could try to get some rest, beware. You’re landing in Bangkok at 21:00, and if you want to fix your body clock quickly, sleeping is a trap. Power through it. Stay awake. Have a few vodkas if that helps (it usually does).

For £173, this route is ridiculous value. (Don't forget you'll need a visa if leaving the airport, in Feb this is $25)

Flight Option 2: £231 to Bangkok (Better Timing)

Very similar to option 1, however I prefer this more, better timing, short layover in Jordan and a much nicer airline (or at least the second and third leg is)

Leg 1: Manchester to Istanbul

This is basically the same setup as before, just flying out of Manchester instead of Stansted. It’s a morning flight with a clean arrival into Istanbul and a huge 28-hour layover. Unlike option 1, this one actually lets you live a little. You’ve got time to party, meet potential travel buddies, sleep properly, and still enjoy a full day in the city. Which, all things considered, is pretty elite.

Leg 2: Istanbul - Jordan

Departing Istanbul at 22:10, you’ve got a short flight over to Jordan. I’d fully recommend trying to sleep through this whole leg. Your main mission right now is fixing your body clock, and the good news is you’re already halfway to Thailand time.

You’ve then got a sweet 3-hour layover, which is perfect. Enough time to stretch, grab a drink, and reset. Beer is fine. Coffee is not. Trust me.

Leg 3: Jordan - Bangkok

Your final leg. Please get at least 3 hours of sleep. This is the one that actually matters. It’ll set you up perfectly for Bangkok, especially because you’re landing at 15:25, right in peak hour.

That timing is elite if you play it right. Get to your accommodation, do the three S’s (shit, shave, shower), then head out. Hit the strip, embrace the chaos, and forget whatever happens next day.

Let’s be honest. The first night is always crazy.

Flight Option 3: £275 to Phuket (Straight Into Island Mode)

This one skips Bangkok completely and drops you straight into Phuket. It’s the most expensive out the 3 but it's much cheaper than stopovers though major hubs and you get a full 24h in Athens.

If you're a true traveller, you'll know this is a no brainer.


Leg 1: London to Athens

You kick things off flying into Athens. It’s a solid first leg and a genuinely good city to lay over in. Athens Airport sits about 35 km from the city, and the metro gets you into the centre in roughly 40 minutes, cheap and easy.

With a full 24 hours in Athens, and an arrival at 13:25, your options are wide open. This isn’t a rush job. You’ve got time to explore, eat well, drink better, and still sleep properly. Time is very much on your side here.

Leg 2: Athens to Sharjah

Admittedly, a 5-hour layover isn’t exactly ideal, but I think the Athens stop earns enough brownie points to cancel it out. You’ve already won there.

Think of this one as admin time. You’ve got enough space to download a few films, catch up on some content, and actually sit down for a proper meal without sprinting through the terminal. Not glamorous, but it does the job.

Leg 3: Sharjah to Phuket

Final leg. Lock in some sleep on this flight if you can. Even a few hours makes a difference because once you land in Phuket, it’s game on. You’re touching down at 10:50 in the morning, which is about as perfect as it gets.

Different route. Different vibe. But if Phuket is the goal, this one absolutely delivers.
