Budapest Christmas Market 2026 in a Day: Hour by Hour from Stansted
A day at the Budapest Christmas markets from Stansted on Monday 16 November 2026 costs about £100 all in: a £68 Ryanair return, checked on Google Flights on 6 October 2026, plus about £32 on the ground. You get about 7.2 hours in the city. Both big markets open on 13 November and are free.

Budapest is the Christmas market people tell you to do as a long weekend. You can do it in a day. Three days after the markets open, Ryanair will get you there and back from Stansted for £68.
The flight is Monday 16 November, out of Stansted at 06:00, landing at 09:25, home at 20:40. £68 is the cheapest same-day return on Google Flights for that early flight, checked on 6 October 2026. Fares move every day, so check the trip page before you book.

What date are the Christmas markets in Budapest?
The two big ones open on Friday 13 November 2026. Advent Bazilika, in front of St Stephen's Basilica, runs to 1 January 2027. Vörösmarty Square runs to New Year's Eve. Both are free to walk round. They're about ten minutes' walk apart, so you do both.
Advent Bazilika is open 11:00 to 22:00 on a Monday, per the organiser. That shapes the day.
The day, hour by hour
06:00. Leave Stansted. Two hours and 25 minutes in the air, and Budapest is an hour ahead.
09:25. Land. Our trip page allows 30 minutes for passports and 40 minutes into town. If this is your first trip to the EU since the new border checks, allow a bit more. The 100E airport bus goes straight to Deák Ferenc tér in the centre, 2,500 forints each way, about £5.75. Our cost data uses the cheaper 200E bus and metro, about £4 there and back.
10:35. In the city. The markets aren't open yet, so walk down to the Danube. The Shoes on the Danube Bank memorial near Parliament is free and worth the quiet ten minutes.
11:00. Advent Bazilika opens. Get there early, before the lunch crowd. In 2025 every big kitchen on the square sold a fixed-price dish for 1,600 forints, about £3.70. Lángos, the fried flatbread, was 2,000 forints plain or 3,200 with cheese and sour cream, about £4.60 and £7.35. 2026 prices aren't out yet.

13:00. Walk it off. Cross the Chain Bridge to Buda and go up to the Castle district. The streets and lower terraces are free and the view back over the river is the best in town. Matthias Church is about £8 if you want to go in.

15:30. Back down to Vörösmarty Square for the second market. A mulled wine was 1,500 forints last year, about £3.45.

16:09. Sunset, per our trip page. The lights come on and both markets look like the photos.
17:30. The Basilica light show. A projection on the front of the church, every half hour from 17:30. Watch the first one, then go.
17:45. Leave the city. That gives 40 minutes to the airport and over two hours there. Home at 22:15.
Is Budapest Christmas market any good?
Yes. The organiser says Advent Bazilika has won Europe's best Christmas market in an online vote four times. It's got nearly 150 stalls, about a hundred of them Hungarian makers. You don't need to trust the vote. The square in front of the Basilica after dark is the reason to go.
Is Budapest too cold in December?
You're going in November, which helps. The average high for November is 9.4°C, per the Hungarian weather service. December drops to 3.5°C. Hat and gloves either way, it's dark by about four.
What the day costs
Flight £68. On the ground, our cost data has £32: the bus in and out, local transport, lunch £8 and dinner £13. About £100 all in. Hungary uses the forint, not the euro.
If Monday 16 November doesn't work, Monday 23 November was £75 and Monday 30 November £80 on our trip pages, both checked on Google Flights on 5 October.
