Bruges Christmas Market 2026: Is a Day Trip Worth It?
Bruges' Christmas markets run 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. British Airways out and Brussels Airlines back from Heathrow on Saturday 28 November was £132 return on Google Flights on 11 October. The direct train from Brussels Airport takes about 85 minutes, leaving about six hours in Bruges.

Bruges at Christmas is the postcard. Cobbled squares, canals, a medieval belfry and a market with an ice rink in the middle of it. The question isn't whether it's pretty. It's whether it works as a day trip, because Bruges has no airport of its own.
Short answer: yes, if you go on a weekend and don't mind a train.
When are the Bruges Christmas markets in 2026?
Visit Bruges lists the Christmas markets as open from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. Sunday to Thursday 11:00 to 20:00, Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 21:00, with some stalls open until 22:00. Christmas Eve closes at 17:00. There are two markets in the centre, on the Markt and on Simon Stevinplein.
How do you get to Bruges, Belgium for the day?
Fly to Brussels. On Saturday 28 November, British Airways leaves Heathrow at 06:30 and lands at 08:45. Brussels Airlines flies home at 21:10 and lands at Heathrow at 21:20. £68 out and £64 back, £132 return on Google Flights, checked on 11 October 2026.
From Brussels Airport there's a direct train to Bruges that takes about 85 minutes. Brussels Airport says tickets from the airport include a €6.90 airport supplement. We couldn't confirm the full fare from an official source, so check it when you buy.

How long do you get in Bruges?
About six hours, roughly 11:00 to 17:00, once you take off the airport and the train at both ends. That's enough for both markets, a canal walk and a long lunch. It isn't enough to also see Brussels, so don't try.

The good
- Two markets in the old town, a few minutes' walk apart
- The ice rink on the Markt, right under the Belfry
- Everything is walkable. You won't need a bus
- On a Saturday the market stays open until 21:00
The not so good
- The train adds nearly three hours to your day
- Heathrow flights cost more than the budget airlines to other markets
- Saturdays are busy. Bruges is small and it fills up
- You'll leave as the lights look their best
Is Bruges worth it for a day trip at Christmas?
Yes, but go in with the right plan. It's not the cheapest Christmas market we've priced, and the travel eats into the day. What you get for it is one of the prettiest old towns in Europe at its best time of year. If you only do one Belgian Christmas day trip, we'd pick Bruges over Brussels.
What's the weather like in Bruges in December?
Cold and damp. December averages a high of about 6.6C and a low of about 1.7C. Bring a waterproof and shoes that can handle wet cobbles.
What to eat at the Bruges Christmas market
Belgian waffles, hot chocolate and Belgian beer. Bruges is full of chocolate shops on the streets around the Markt, and at Christmas they go all out with their windows. The stalls on the square do the warm stuff: waffles, hot drinks and mulled wine.
A walking route for the day
- Markt: the main Christmas market and the ice rink, under the Belfry
- Burg: the square next door, with the Gothic town hall
- The canals: walk the Groenerei and Rozenhoedkaai, the classic Bruges views
- Simon Stevinplein: the second, smaller Christmas market
- Minnewater: the lake in the south of town, quiet in winter
- Back to the Markt as the lights come on, then the train
It's all on foot and the whole loop is short. Bruges is a small city, which is exactly why it suits a day trip. You see the main square, the medieval buildings and the canals without rushing.
Tips for visiting Bruges at Christmas
- Get the early flight. Every hour in Bruges counts on a short winter day
- Check the train times home before you get lost in the streets. The last thing you want is to miss the airport train
- Saturdays are the most festive and the most crowded. A Friday is a good middle ground
- Eat a proper lunch and snack at the market later, the stalls are best after dark
- Wear proper shoes. The cobbles are uneven and often wet in winter
Bruges or Brussels for a Christmas day trip?
Brussels is easier, because the airport train is 18 minutes not 85. Bruges is prettier and feels more like Christmas. If the travel time doesn't bother you, pick Bruges. If you want the longest day possible, pick Brussels.
