Charleroi from Manchester on Fri 18 Dec: times and today's price
What is the Brussels Christmas market?
It's called Winter Wonders in English, Plaisirs d'Hiver in French and Winterpret in Dutch. The City of Brussels runs it every year across the old town. It isn't one square of stalls. It's a trail of Christmas markets, lights, a big wheel and an ice rink, all a few minutes' walk apart.
It's busy. The 2025 edition counted 4,355,253 visits, and 1.6 million of them came from abroad, mainly France, Spain and the UK, according to the figures reported by local news site BX1 in January 2026. So go in knowing you won't have it to yourself, especially after dark.
When is the Brussels Christmas market 2026?
27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, per the organiser. Don't book a November Friday before the 27th, the stalls won't be up. The organiser says the full programme for this year comes out in November.
It's open 12:00 to 22:00 every day, closing at 18:00 on 24 December, 31 December and 3 January. Entry is free.
Where are the Brussels Christmas market locations?
The organiser lists 238 chalets across the whole event. These are the main sites, using the 2025 map, which is the latest published:
- Grand-Place: the Christmas tree, the light show and a Nativity scene. Hardly any stalls here, just 2 chalets in 2025
- Place de la Bourse: 77 chalets in 2025, the best spot for crafts and decorations, with Belgian Beer World next door
- Place De Brouckère: a covered ice rink, curling and a reindeer carousel. Skating was €12 (£10.17) with skates in 2025, no booking
- Place de la Monnaie: 23 chalets, a Christmas tree made from recycled material and a champagne and oysters terrace
- Sainte-Catherine and the Vismet: the biggest stretch, 137 chalets in 2025, plus the 55 metre Ferris wheel
- Tour Noire: a children's village with Santa and Saint Nicholas
From the Grand-Place it's about 300 metres to the Bourse, another 300 to Sainte-Catherine and another 300 to the Vismet. De Brouckère and the Monnaie are just off that line. You can walk the lot in under an hour without stopping, so the time goes on eating, drinking and queuing for the wheel.
The wheel was €10 (£8.47) for adults and €6 (£5.08) for under 12s in 2025. It's worth it in daylight for the view over the market and the rooftops.
Where to see the Christmas tree and lights in Brussels
The Christmas tree stands on the Grand-Place, in front of the City Hall. That's also where the sound and light show plays on the City Hall tower. The church of Sainte-Catherine is lit up too, and the wheel is lit along the old canal basins at the Vismet.
What time is the light show on the Grand-Place?
In 2025 the show ran every 30 minutes from 17:00 to 22:00, five minutes each, and it's free. There's no show on 24 December, 31 December or 3 January 2027. Sunset on the 18th is 16:39. You need to leave town at about 18:35, so you get the 17:00, 17:30 and 18:00 shows.
That timing matters. Spend the daylight in the side streets and the Sainte-Catherine stalls, then be on the Grand-Place from 17:00.
What food is there at the Brussels Christmas market?
Belgian Christmas market food is fried, sweet or both. These prices are from the 2025 edition, from a local press survey published by L'Avenir and DH on 21 December 2025. There's no official price list.
- Mulled wine (vin chaud): €5 (£4.24), €2 more with rum or amaretto, plus a €1 glass deposit
- Hot chocolate: €4 (£3.39)
- Beer, 33cl: from €5 (£4.24)
- Hot dog or fries: €4 to €5
- Six scampi: €14 (£11.86)
- Ten roasted chestnuts: €5 (£4.24)
- Waffle: €4 to €5. Eight croustillons (little doughnuts): €7 to €8
For a cheap sit-down lunch, get frites from Fritland on Rue Henri Maus, beside the Bourse. Keep your mulled wine glass if you want a souvenir, or hand it back for the deposit.
How do you get from Charleroi to Brussels?
The Flibco coach. It runs from the airport to Brussels-Midi every 20 minutes and takes 55 to 60 minutes. Online fares start at €14.99 (£12.70) each way. We've allowed £26 return.
From Brussels-Midi it's about 1.7 km to the Grand-Place. Take the premetro 3 or 4 to Bourse, or walk it in about 25 minutes. The other way in is the TEC bus to Charleroi's main station, about 20 minutes for €6 (£5.08), then a train to Brussels. The coach is simpler for a day trip.
How should you plan the day?
You land at 10:20 and you're in the centre at about 11:50, just before the stalls open at 12:00. Start at the Vismet and Sainte-Catherine while it's light, and do the wheel early before the queue builds.
Have lunch around the Bourse, then use the early afternoon for the free things within a 15 minute walk: the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert, Manneken Pis and the Mont des Arts. Be back on the Grand-Place before 17:00 for the first show. Head for the coach at Brussels-Midi at about 18:35 for the 21:35 flight.
What's the weather like in Brussels in December?
Cold and often damp. Belgium's weather service gives Brussels an average December high of 6.1C and low of 1.6C (Uccle, 1981 to 2010). It rains on about 13 days of the month, there's about 1.5 hours of sunshine a day and frost on about 10 days. Snow that settles is uncommon.
What should you wear?
A warm waterproof coat, a hat and gloves. You'll be outside for most of seven hours and standing still for the light shows. The old town is cobbled, so wear flat shoes with grip.
Christmas market travel tips
- Weekends are the busiest. The 2025 peak was Saturday 13 December, with almost 200,000 visitors. A Friday daytime is calmer
- Belgian traders must offer card payment by law, but carry a few euros for the smaller chalets
- Toilets are in the Bourse and De Brouckère metro stations and at Brussels-Central station
- Gare Centrale, Bourse, De Brouckère and Sainte-Catherine metro stations have lifts
- Allow time at Brussels-Midi for the coach back. Missing it means missing the flight
What does it cost on the ground?
About £72 a person: £26 for the coach, £5 for city transport, £17 for lunch and £24 for dinner. Add the £92 flight and the whole day is about £164.
Are there other Christmas markets in Belgium?
Antwerp's runs from 4 December 2026 to 3 January 2027, closed on 1 January. There are no UK flights to Antwerp's own airport, so you'd fly to Brussels Airport or Charleroi and take the train.
