£87 flight, 7 hours on the ground, and a Christmas market that's been voted Europe's best more than once. Here's what people ask before booking it, answered straight.
Is Zagreb worth visiting at Christmas?
Yes, if you go for Advent and not a full city break. The Lower Town turns into one long Christmas market, squares, parks and the streets in between, and the Upper Town gets its share too. For £87 on the flight, that's a lot of Christmas for your money.
How much does it cost?
About £125 all in. The flight is £87 return with Ryanair from Stansted on Monday 30 November, the cheapest same-day return on Google Flights, checked on 1 October 2026. On the ground our cost data has £2 for the bus in and out, £3 local transport, £12 lunch and £21 dinner. Add £3 for a coffee or a pint.
Getting there
Ryanair from Stansted, out at 08:10 and landing at 11:25. The flight home is 18:30. From the airport it's a city bus into the centre, and our cost data has that at £2 there and back. The airport's out of town, so don't cut it fine on the way back.
Is 7 hours enough?
For the markets, yes. For Zagreb, no. You land at 11:25 and fly home at 18:30, so it's a long afternoon in town. That's fine, because what you came for is right in the centre. Pick a few spots and don't try to tick off all 25.
Why a Monday?
It was the cheapest of the dates we checked. Thursday 4 December was £100 and Monday 7 December £105. And Advent opened two days earlier, so it's all up and running.
Where is the Zagreb Christmas market?
Ban Jelačić Square, the main square in the Lower Town. It's the middle of everything, with the statue, the lights and the stalls. From there it's a short walk to Zrinjevac, the tree-lined park that gets lit up for Advent, and up to the Upper Town.

Is there anything free?
Most of it. Advent's spread across the city's squares and parks. St Mark's Church with its tiled roof, the Strossmayer Promenade and Dolac market by the cathedral are all free. The funicular up to the Upper Town is about 66 cents, the shortest ride you'll ever pay for.

What to eat at Zagreb Advent
Sarma is the one. Cabbage leaves rolled round minced meat and rice, cooked slowly, proper winter food. Wash it down with kuhano vino, Croatian mulled wine. For something sweet, fritule, little fried doughnut balls. Our cost data has lunch at £12 and dinner at £21, and if you graze the stalls you can probably skip the sit-down meal. We don't quote stall prices because Advent Zagreb doesn't publish them.
What would you skip?
The Museum of Illusions at €12. You've got 7 hours in Zagreb at Christmas and you're spending it in a room of mirrors? If it's chucking it down and you want a museum, the Museum of Broken Relationships is €9 and a lot more interesting.
What's the catch?
The flight home. It gets dark around 16:15 at the end of November, and with an 18:30 flight you need to be heading for the airport not long after. So you get the lights for about an hour. Plan the afternoon so you're back on Ban Jelačić Square when they come on.
