Getting there: the flight bit

From Stansted, flights to Nuremberg only run on Sundays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so a Sunday trip is actually one of the easier days to catch a direct flight rather than a lucky coincidence. If you're not near Stansted, you're looking at connecting via London or flying into a nearby hub and taking a train in, which eats into your day fast. For a genuine single-day trip, a direct flight from Stansted is the one to chase.

On the day itself you land at 08:30 and fly home at 19:55, so call it 11.4 hours on the ground. That's enough for a proper wander, several stalls' worth of food, and still time to sit down somewhere warm before heading back.

The market itself: what it actually costs

With no entry charge listed, the market cost is really a food and drink cost. A Glühwein (mulled wine) usually comes with a deposit on the mug, which you get back if you return it, or you can just keep it as a souvenir, which is what most people end up doing whether they mean to or not.

Budget about £14 for a decent lunch of stall food across a couple of stops, more if you're grazing all afternoon, which, honestly, you probably will be.

The market runs 10:00 to 21:00 on your date, so it's open from not long after you land until you head for the airport. No rushing to catch it before closing, no arriving to shuttered stalls. That's one genuine advantage of a Sunday trip over trying to squeeze it in after a late Tuesday landing.

What we'd actually do with the day

Land, get into the centre, and head straight for the Hauptmarkt, the main market square, before the crowds thicken up, because Sunday afternoons at a market this well known do get busy. Mid-morning is your best shot at actually seeing the stalls rather than the backs of everyone else's heads.

We'd do a slow lap first without buying anything, work out which stalls actually look worth queuing for, then double back. Skip the urge to buy the first mulled wine you see, some stalls are noticeably better than others and there's no shame in comparison shopping when you're paying per cup.

Leave an hour or so spare towards the end of the day that isn't market-focused. Nuremberg's old town has plenty beyond the stalls, and after a few hours of crowds and sugar, a quiet wander somewhere less packed is exactly what you'll want before the flight home.

Is it worth doing as a day trip?

Honestly, yes, but go in knowing what you're signing up for. Eleven and a half hours sounds like plenty until you've queued twice for Glühwein and spent forty minutes deciding between two nearly identical gingerbread stalls. It's not a relaxed city break, it's a fast, cold, quite fun day out built entirely around one market.

If you want a slower, less crowded experience, this isn't it, the whole point of Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt is that it's one of the best known in Germany, and that fame brings the crowds along with it. But for a single costed day out with no accommodation to pay for, it stacks up well. Flights are the main expense, the market itself won't drain your wallet unless you let it, and you're back home the same night with a slightly ridiculous amount of gingerbread in your bag.
