Cologne Christmas Market Day Trip: 10 Hours, Every Market, One Day
Cologne's main Christmas market by the cathedral runs 16 November to 23 December 2026, free. Ryanair from Stansted on Friday 18 December was £129 return on Google Flights on 10 October, giving about 10.4 hours in Cologne, enough for five of its markets.

Cologne doesn't have a Christmas market. It has about ten. The famous one sits under the cathedral, and the rest are spread across the old town and along the Rhine, all within walking distance.
The good news for a day trip is time. On the Friday we checked you get over ten hours in the city, the longest day of any Christmas market trip we've priced this year.
Christmas markets in Cologne: dates for 2026
- Cathedral market (Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom): Mon 16 November to Wed 23 December, closed Sun 22 November
- Heinzels Wintermärchen, Heumarkt: Mon 23 November 2026 to Sun 10 January 2027
- Heinzels Wintermärchen, Alter Markt: Mon 23 November to Wed 23 December
- Markt der Engel, Neumarkt: Mon 16 November to Wed 23 December, closed 22 November
- Nikolausdorf, Rudolfplatz: Mon 16 November to Wed 23 December, closed 22 November
- Harbour market by the Chocolate Museum: Fri 13 November to Wed 23 December
All of them are free to walk round. Most close on 23 December, so a December day trip has to be before then.
How do you get to Cologne for a day?
Ryanair from Stansted on Friday 18 December leaves at 06:45 and lands at Cologne Bonn at 09:00. The flight home leaves at 22:10 and lands at Stansted at 22:30. £129 return on Google Flights, checked on 10 October 2026.
From the airport, the S-Bahn or regional train to Köln Hauptbahnhof takes 11 to 15 minutes and costs €3.50 (£2.97). The cathedral is right outside the station, so the first market is a six minute walk from the train.
Cologne from Stansted on Fri 18 Dec: times and today's price
What does the day look like?
- 06:45: leave Stansted
- 09:00: land in Cologne, train to the main station
- About 09:35: in the city. Coffee by the cathedral while the markets set up
- 10:00: climb the cathedral tower before the queues, about £7
- 11:00: the cathedral market opens. Over 140 stalls under the spires
- 12:30: lunch at Heinzels on the Alter Markt, then the Heumarkt and its ice rink
- 14:30: walk along the Rhine to the harbour market by the Chocolate Museum
- 16:00: Markt der Engel on the Neumarkt as the light goes. Sunset is 16:26
- 17:30: Nikolausdorf on Rudolfplatz, then back towards the cathedral for the lights
- 19:00: dinner in the old town
- About 19:55: train back to the airport for the 22:10 flight
That's about 10.4 hours in Cologne, and every market on the list above.

Which Cologne Christmas market is best?
The cathedral market is the one people come for, and it deserves it. The organiser lists over 140 stalls and more than 100 free stage events, and the city says about 4 to 5 million people visit each year. It's busy, so go early.
Our favourite for atmosphere is Heinzels Wintermärchen in the old town. The Heumarkt has an open-air ice rink with a straight of more than 100 metres looping round the statue in the middle of the square. The Alter Markt next door is smaller and full of craft stalls.
Markt der Engel on the Neumarkt has about 80 stalls and, true to its name, angels. Nikolausdorf on Rudolfplatz is the one for kids, with a heated house for free crafts and St Nicholas walking round every day.
The smaller Cologne markets worth a detour
- Weihnachtsmarkt im Stadtgarten: about 60 local makers that change each week, and its own 50:50 mulled wine blend. Ran 14 November to 23 December in 2025
- Heavenue: neon-lit installations and independent brands, 16 November to 23 December
- Santa's Christmas market in the MediaPark: about 80 stalls styled as gift boxes, 19 November to 23 December
- Veedelsadvent on Chlodwigplatz: 15 to 20 huts run by local Südstadt sellers, with Reibekuchen and Kölsch on draught, 19 November to 23 December
We wouldn't fit these into a first day trip, but if you've done Cologne before they're a good reason to come back.
Tips for your visit
- Get to the cathedral market as it opens at 11:00. By mid-afternoon it's shoulder to shoulder, especially on Fridays and Saturdays
- The markets close on 23 December, so there's no Christmas Eve option
- Keep a few euros in cash, as not every stall takes cards
- The cathedral itself is free to go in, and worth ten minutes even if you skip the tower
- Children's activities are free at Nikolausdorf and the stage programme at the cathedral market is free for everyone
Other things to do in Cologne
Walk across the Hohenzollern Bridge, covered in love locks, to the Rheinboulevard in Deutz for the best view of the cathedral and the old town across the Rhine. It's free, and best at dusk. The Chocolate Museum is about £15, Museum Ludwig about £12 and the Roman-Germanic Museum about £5. In spring the Flora botanical garden is free, but in December we'd stay in the old town.
Is Cologne worth visiting for its Christmas markets?
Yes. For a day trip it might be the best in Germany: lots of markets close together, a cathedral station right in the middle and a flight that gives you ten hours. Festive, easy and good value.
How much is mulled wine at the Cologne Christmas markets?
About €5 (£4.24) a cup in 2025, plus a mug deposit of €3.50 to €4 (£2.97 to £3.39) depending on the market. Keep the mug and you've got a souvenir, or hand it back and get the deposit.
What's the weather like in Cologne in December?
Cold and grey more often than snowy. December averages a high of about 6.5C and a low of about 1C. Wear layers, a waterproof coat and flat shoes, because you'll walk a lot.
What does the day cost?
About £175 a person. That's the £129 flight plus about £46 on the ground: £6 for the train both ways, £8 for local transport, £13 for lunch and £19 for dinner. The cathedral tower climb is about £7 and the Chocolate Museum about £15 if you want to add one.
Is Cologne or Düsseldorf better for Christmas markets?
Cologne for the big classic market under a cathedral. Düsseldorf for something more spread out and stylish, with markets along the Königsallee and the Rhine. They're only about half an hour apart by train, but in one day we'd pick one and do it properly.
