Switzerland has a reputation. You land, buy a coffee and your card cries. So we costed a day at the Basel Christmas market line by line, franc by franc, to see if it holds up.
The flight is easyJet from Gatwick on Wednesday 9 December, out at 07:45, landing at 10:25, home at 21:20. £62 is the cheapest same-day return on Google Flights for that date, checked on 6 October 2026. Three days earlier it was £45, so it's moving. Check the trip page before you book.

When is the Basel Christmas market 2026?
26 November to 23 December 2026, every day 11:00 to 20:30, per the canton of Basel. It's free to get in. It's one market on two main squares, Barfüsserplatz with 104 stalls last year and Münsterplatz with 44, plus food and drink on Claraplatz over the river.
The money diary
Prices in Swiss francs, at about 91p to the franc. Market prices are from last year. 2026 prices aren't out yet.
10:25, landing. £0. EuroAirport is in France with a Swiss side. Follow the signs for Basel and Switzerland. Our trip page allows 30 minutes for passports and 20 into town. First time through the new border checks? Allow a little more.
10:55, the bus. CHF 10.70, £9.75. Get the Basel day ticket from the machine, not two singles. Two singles are CHF 13.20, and the day ticket covers the airport, the number 50 bus to Basel SBB station and every tram after that. Running total £9.75.
11:15, in the city. £0. Tram 8 from the station to Barfüsserplatz is six minutes and your ticket covers it. The market opens at 11:00, so you walk straight in.
12:30, lunch. £18, per our cost data. This is where Basel bites. Running total £27.75.
14:00, Münsterplatz. £0. Walk up the hill, about six minutes. The tree under the cathedral is decorated by Johann Wanner, whose Christmas shop is on Spalenberg and free to look round. Behind the cathedral, the Pfalz terrace gives you the Rhine for nothing.

16:00, the cathedral tower. CHF 6, £5.45. On weekdays you can climb the Martinsturm from 16:00 to 18:00. Sunset is about 16:39 on our trip page, so you're up there for the light going. Running total £33.20.
16:45, mulled wine. About CHF 6, £5.45, plus a CHF 4 mug deposit, £3.65. Keep the mug and that's your souvenir sorted. Running total £42.30.

17:30, over the river. £0. Walk the Mittlere Brücke to Kleinbasel for Claraplatz and the Adväntsgass on Rheingasse. The Christmas lights are on from 15:00 to 22:30.
18:00, dinner. £24, per our cost data. Running total £66.30.
19:00, leave the city. £0, the day ticket again. Home at 21:55.
Is the Basel Christmas market worth visiting?
If you want old-fashioned, yes. It's not the biggest in Europe, but the canton says it had over a million visitors last year, and Münsterplatz under the cathedral is as pretty as any of the German ones. The canton had to control the entrances on the busiest Advent weekend in 2024, so a Wednesday makes sense.
What it costs, all in
Flight £62 plus our diary's £66.30 is about £128. Our trip page, which counts transport, lunch and dinner only, has the day at £113. So the reputation is half right. Lunch and dinner are dear. The market itself costs nothing to walk round.
Switzerland uses the franc. Basel Tourism said in 2023 that every stall takes cash. Whether they all take cards isn't published, so carry some francs. December averages a high of 5.7°C.
