Amsterdam Christmas Market 2026: 3 Ways to Do It in a Day
Amsterdam's Christmas market at Museumplein runs 3 to 27 December 2026, 12:00 to 21:00, free. easyJet from Gatwick on Wednesday 9 December was £87 return on Google Flights on 11 October, with about 9.5 hours in Amsterdam.

Amsterdam isn't a classic Christmas markets city like Cologne or Kraków. It has one main market, and the rest of the festive bit is the city itself: canals, lights and very cosy cafés. That makes it easy to do in a day.
When is the Amsterdam Christmas market in 2026?
Ice Village on Museumplein runs 3 to 27 December 2026, in front of the Rijksmuseum. 12:00 to 21:00 from 3 to 24 December, 12:00 to 19:00 on 25 and 26 December, and 12:00 to 18:00 on 27 December. The organiser says it's free to visit and has more than 50 stands.
How do you get there for the day?
easyJet from Gatwick on Wednesday 9 December leaves at 06:15 and lands at 08:40. The flight home leaves at 21:25 and lands at Gatwick at 21:40. £32 out and £55 back, £87 return on Google Flights, checked on 11 October 2026.
The train from Schiphol into the city takes about 17 minutes and costs €6. You're in Amsterdam by about 09:40 and need to head back around 19:10, so about 9.5 hours.
Amsterdam from Gatwick on Wed 9 Dec: times and today's price
Way 1: the free day
Walk the historic canals in the morning, the Begijnhof, the Bloemenmarkt and Albert Cuypmarkt, all free. Take the free GVB ferry from behind Centraal Station to Amsterdam-Noord for the view back. Then Museumplein from 12:00 for the Christmas market, and Vondelpark next door as it gets dark. Sunset is at 16:29.
Way 2: the museum day
Book one big museum for the morning, the Rijksmuseum or the Van Gogh Museum at €25 each (about £21), or the Anne Frank House at €16.50 (about £14). Both of the first two are on Museumplein, so you walk straight out into the market.
Way 3: the lights day
Amsterdam Light Festival is listed for 26 November 2026 to 17 January 2027, with the lights on from 17:30. Boat and walking tickets start at €29.75. You'd only get an hour or so before heading to the airport, so this works best on a later flight. The organiser says dates and times can still change.
Which is best?
For a first visit, way 1. It's cheap, it's the city at its prettiest, and the market sits nicely in the middle of the day. If you've been before, go for the museum day.
What does the day cost?
About £138 a person. That's the £87 flight plus about £51 on the ground: £10 for the train both ways, £8 for local transport, £18 for lunch, £15 for dinner. Add a museum ticket if you want one.
Amsterdam in winter: what's the weather like?
Grey, windy and cold. December averages a high of about 6.9C and a low of about 1.9C. Wear layers. Most of the day is outside.
Is there an ice rink at the Amsterdam Christmas market?
Not that we can promise. Despite the Ice Village name, the 2026 listing talks about the market, the stands and the Christmas village, and doesn't mention skating. If you want to skate, check icevillage.nl closer to the time.
Traditional Christmas and winter food to try in Amsterdam
- Oliebollen: Dutch doughnuts dusted with icing sugar, sold from stalls all winter
- Poffertjes: tiny fluffy pancakes with butter and sugar
- Stroopwafels: the caramel waffles, best warm
- Erwtensoep: thick pea soup, the proper Dutch winter lunch
The market stalls do the snacks and the mulled wine. For a sit-down lunch, the brown cafés in the Jordaan are cosy and not as expensive as the canal-side places.
Christmas shopping in Amsterdam
The Nine Streets (De 9 Straatjes) between the canals are full of small independent shops and look great with the winter lights. Kalverstraat is the busy main shopping street. The Bloemenmarkt sells Christmas trees, bulbs and decorations along the Singel.
Tips for a December day in Amsterdam
- Watch the bikes. Cycle lanes look like pavements and the bikes don't stop
- Pay for the train and trams by tapping your bank card
- The market opens at 12:00, so do the canals and museums in the morning
- Sinterklaas is on 5 December in the Netherlands. A trip after that is when the Christmas season really takes over
- Keep the last hour for the airport. The Schiphol queues can be long in December
