August 2026 update: monsoon season is active

Monsoon flooding has picked up again across the region. Through late July and early August 2026, disaster agencies logged around 30 flood, storm and landslide events across ASEAN. In Thailand, flooding hit the north and border provinces including Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Nan, Phayao, Phetchabun, Chanthaburi and Ranong, with Nakhon Phanom city flooding on 10 August. In the Philippines, Tropical Depression Luis and the southwest monsoon caused flooding in the Bicol (Region V) and Zamboanga Peninsula (Region IX) areas. Vietnam reported storms, flooding and landslides in northern and central provinces including Lao Cai, Dien Bien, Son La, Lam Dong and Ca Mau.

Most of the region stays manageable with planning: check the morning forecast, keep outdoor plans to the early part of the day, and avoid mountain roads and small boats when storms are active. The bigger exceptions are the typhoon-prone Philippines and Vietnam's central coast. Always check your own government's travel advisory and local alerts close to your trip. Indonesia:

30th November: Despite flooding and landslides severely affecting Sumatra with over 400 deaths, the main tourist hub areas of Seminyak, Ubud, and Canggu remain unaffected.

Thailand:

27th November: Southern Thailand Flooding

26th November: An emergency was declared in Hat Yai - Bangkok Post

11th November - Heavy rainfall continues in northern Thailand (Chiang Mai, Chang Rai)

Philippines:

11th November - 18 dead, and over 1 million displaced from Typhoon Fung-wong

Vietnam:

11th November - Heavy rain forecasted for Hoi An

Asia's Drowning in Problems

In the past 14 days here are some worrying facts:

• The Philippines have been hit by Typhoon Kalmaegi which caused catastrophic flooding across the central Philippines (especially Cebu and surrounding areas) where a national state of emergency was declared. No official death toll has been released but it's exceeded 100 so far.
• Vietnam has also been hit hard, they've been hit by severe floods and landslides in central provinces Hue, Hoi An, Quang Nam, Da Nang. They've also seen flash flooding in Ho Chi Minh City. Over 37 deaths have been recorded and they've been hit today with the same Typhoon, Kalmaegi which battered the Philippines just days ago.
• Thailand's tourist hotspot Phuket has seen flooding after persistent heavy rain, Bangkok too was flooding in areas on Monday 5th November. Chao Phraya basin and nationwide alerts for 7th-10th of November after Dam outflows increased in 11 provinces.
• Myanmar faced ubran flooding across multiple Yangon townships after heavy downpours, this even put a halt to Taunggyi Tazaungdaing Festival and was even extended because of the recent weather.
• Malaysia has too witnessed severe flooding in Perak, Kedah and Penang. Over 4,000 evacuations to temporary shelters within the last 14 days.

A significant volunteering effort is underway as flood-waters ravage affected regions, currently there's around 300 volunteers daily helping to clean up and restoring homes in the hardest hitting provinces and much more are needed.

Travelling isn't just about the breathtaking views, the cheap food and loving locals, it's also about giving back, so take a second to think about volunteering, the people need you. Your activities will include:

• Removing debris and mud from flooded homes
• Assisting with drainage, pumping out water and clearing access pathways
• Helping families salvage personal belongings and dry out homes
• Supporting local relief centres with food and water

Is it safe to travel to Southeast Asia during the monsoon?

Usually yes, with planning. Rain often comes in short heavy bursts rather than all day, and most cities cope fine. The real risks are flash floods, landslides on mountain roads and typhoons, so avoid affected provinces, keep flexible plans and check local alerts. When is monsoon season in Southeast Asia?
