Rio Carnival 2026: The Complete Guide

Are you going to enjoy Rio Carnival in 2026? Check out the complete guide: where to stay, how to avoid scams, the new 3-day Sapucaí calendar and real tips for surviving the 40-degree heat without burning your scalp. Don't set foot in Rio without reading this!

Why does Rio Carnival ignore the calendar?

If you look at the official 2026 calendar, you will see that Carnival ‘begins’ on 14 February. But for Rio residents, the calendar is merely a suggestion. In Rio, the festivities are a state of mind that takes over the streets months before.

And the party doesn't end on Ash Wednesday. Rio's ‘hangover’ is the liveliest in the world: the following weekend, we still have the Champions' Parade and ‘after’ blocos, such as Monobloco, which draw crowds who refuse to accept that the revelry is over.

Technical Rehearsals: The stage for free

The Technical Rehearsals at Sapucaí are the perfect chance to step onto the biggest stage on Earth without paying a penny! The atmosphere is like a rehearsal among friends, but the energy is like a championship final. Check out the official 2026 calendar on the LIESA website.

Highlights of the 2026 calendar: Where and when to be

With over 400 blocks, you need to stay focused. Here are the moments you can't miss:

  • Pre-Carnival (January until 8 February): Total focus on technical rehearsals at the Sambódromo (Sunday evenings).
  • Friday (13/02): Official opening. The Bloco Carmelitas, in Santa Teresa is the best place to feel the soul of the city.
  • Saturday (14/02): The giant Cordão da Bola Preta dominates the city centre in the morning. In the afternoon, the Banda de Ipanema brings colour and diversity to the South Zone.
  • Sunday to Tuesday (15/02 to 17/02): The day belongs to neighbourhood blocos (such as Simpatia é Quase Amor) and the night is sacred at the Sambódromo.
  • Post-Carnival (21/02 and 22/02): The Champions' Parade and the mega-block Monobloco bring the party to a close.

Want to check timetables and addresses in real time?
The most comprehensive source for advance planning in 2026 is the  Diário do Rio. For last-minute official confirmation, keep an eye on the Visit.Rio portal.

Where to Stay: A Strategic Decision

  • South Zone (Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon): The most popular and safest area, with easy access to the underground.
  • Downtown and Lapa: The birthplace of bohemian life. Intense nightlife and affordable prices, but expect a lot of noise.
  • Porto Maravilha: A modern option, ideal for those who want to focus on the Sapucaí parades and parties at Pier Mauá.

Logistics: The Metro is your best friend

Between 13 and 17 February, forget about cars or apps. MetrôRio operates 24 hours a day and is the only way to get around the roadblocks.

  • Contactless payment: Use your card or mobile phone directly at the turnstile..
  • No dynamic pricing: Unlike apps, the metro has a fixed price and the carriage becomes an extension of the party.

Official Uniform and Sun Care

With temperatures reaching 40°C in 2026, comfort is king:

  1. Always wear trainers: Protect yourself from broken glass and puddles.
  2. Protect your scalp: Wear caps or headwear. Real tip: Apply sunscreen to your hairline. Burning the top of your head on the first day is the fastest way to ruin your trip.
  3. Hydration and fan: Drink water between beers and bring a fan. It will be your portable ‘air conditioning’.
  • EXTRA TIP: Buy cheap accessories at Saara (Downtown) before the party starts.

Streetwise Tips: How to have a carefree time

Rio during Carnival is an explosion of joy. The secret to enjoying it 100% without any worries is simple: be strategic and cautious. By following the ‘Carioca style’, you can relax and focus on what matters.

  • A money belt is your best friend: wear that thin pouch inside your clothing. With your mobile phone and card safely tucked away, you are free to jump around and hug everyone without having to check your pockets every five minutes. That's freedom!
  • Strategic photos: Want to capture the carnival? Of course! Just do as the locals do: stop for a second near a police officer, inside a shop or in a quieter spot, take the photo and put your camera away. Then it's back to the festivities.

Sisterhood at the Street Party: Looking out for each other.

For women, Rio Carnival is a giant support network. The atmosphere is one of unity.

  • Travelling together on the way there and back: More than just safety, it's guaranteed fun. Arranging to arrive and leave together avoids the stress of missed connections..
  • The Meeting Point: Mobile phone signals often fail in crowds. Before entering the block, choose a reference point (e.g., ‘in front of such-and-such ice cream parlour’). If anyone gets lost, they'll know where the party continues!
  • Transport: MetrôRio is the darling of revellers. It is brightly lit, full of people in fancy dress and fast. If you use an app, just check the sign before getting on a simple habit in any big city.
  • Support Network: Did you see someone in need of help or feel uncomfortable? Rio is a champion of campaigns such as "NÃO É NÃO!" (No Means No!). Look for the support tents or any other female reveller; mutual help among women is what makes Carnival so welcoming.
Não é Não!

Where to seek support if required:

  • DEAT: Tourist Assistance Police Station (Leblon): entirely focused on visitors.
  • Riotur Information Desks: Information desks in Copacabana and Ipanema.
  • Emergency: Use the App 190 RJ or look for the Segurança Presente tents scattered throughout the blocks.

Summary: Rio is not for amateurs, but with your money belt in place and your friends nearby, your only concern will be deciding which parade to attend next!

The Sapucaí Ritual

In 2026, the Special Group will parade on three nights (Sunday, Monday and Tuesday).

  • Where to buy: Exclusive channel via Ticketmaster Brasil.
  • Survival Tip: Bring a disposable raincoat (umbrellas are prohibited) and lots of energy to watch the sun rise on the runway!

Etiquette and Respect
  1. Pee in the right place: Zero Waste fines are steep (approx.£110). Use the portable toilets.
  2. ‘No means no’: Kissing only with consent. Rio has zero tolerance for harassment.
  3. Respect the residents: Do not block entrances and do not climb on historical monuments.

Whether it's the luxurious glamour of Sapucaí or the sacred sweat of the street blocks, Rio's Carnival is democratic and unforgettable. With these tips, you're already one step ahead of most tourists. Now all you have to do is choose your costume in Saara and dive into the biggest party on Earth.

Viva o Rio, viva o Carnaval 2026!
