LAX Rekindle's It's Relationship With BKK, Thanks To United Airlines.

After 10 years, flights from America to Thailand are finally back. United Airlines relaunched the route from Los Angeles on October 24th, 2025, and it s about time. The first flight landed in Bangkok on the 26th of October 2025, this is perfect timing for Thailands high season.

I have a good friend, Marcellus, I know how happy he'll be about this news, as he's already flown out to Thailand twice this year to see me from Arizona and on both occasions he's transiting through Japan totally 4+ flights each way.

The route disappeared many years ago because of 2 main reasons: Demand and Safety. The two combined was a cocktail for disaster and the inevitable unfortunately happened.

What Happened To Thailands Air Safety Rating?

Back in 2015, Thailand’s aviation safety rating got dropped by the FAA. They basically said the system wasn’t meeting international standards and dropped it to what’s called Category 2. It wasn’t that Thai airlines were unsafe to fly. The problem was how things were being managed behind the scenes. The FAA said Thailand didn’t have enough qualified inspectors, the paperwork was messy, and the rules didn’t match what international aviation expects. In short, the system needed fixing.

The downgrade meant Thai airlines were still allowed to fly their existing routes to America. but couldn’t add new ones or partner with American carriers. It slowed everything down for years. After that, Thailand spent almost a decade fixing the mess. The Civil Aviation Authority brought in new systems, trained more inspectors, and worked hard to clean up everything. By early 2025, the FAA came back to review it again and this time Thailand passed.

On April 22nd 2025, Thailand officially got it's Category 1 safety rating back meaning Thai airlines can now launch new American routes again and start working with American carriers.

Will This Help Thailands Struggling Tourism?

According to NationThailand from January 1st 2025 to September 30th 2025 arrivals stood at 24.11 million, a 7.56% decrease from the same period in 2024. Now, Samar and I have spent 6 months of this year so far in Thailand and we don't physically see or feel a difference in numbers but facts don't lie. So will these new flights from LAX to BKK make a noticeable difference?

It’s hard to say how much one route can move the needle, but it’s a good start. The US market is strong, Americans usually stay longer and spend more than most short-haul traveller's. If this flight does well, it could encourage more airlines to reopen long-haul routes, which Thailand really needs right now. At the end of the day, this isn’t just another flight. It’s a signal that confidence is coming back. And if Thailand can keep building on that, the country might finally see tourism bounce back to where it belongs.
